Brazilian young Joao Fonseca became the first player born in 2006 to win a title of ATP Tour’s bachelors after he underlined his status as one of the most promising tennis stars.
The 18-year-old defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 7-6 (7-1) in the Argentine final Open, a result that made him the 10th newest champion in the ATP tour history and raised it to 68- In the world rankings ahead of his home event in Rio de Janeiro this week.
The FONSECA is the fourth youngest player since 2000 claiming a title of ATP single, after Kei Nishikori, Spanish Duet Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
His victory in Buenos Aires follows by claiming the next Gen ATP final trophy in December – a tour for the best male players aged 21 and under – and then Andrey Rublev stunning in the first round of Australian Open, January.
Fonseca’s victory over Cerundolo in his opponent’s town came after the young man fought again from a split at the beginning of the opening.
He then said, “That was only an incredible week to me. Of course I want to be No. 1. Of course I want to get a collision.”
Alcaraz, Andy Murray and Boris Becker were among those who praise the sounds on social media, with Murray writing on X: “We can’t wait for the first match vs alcaraz.”
Becker added: “Look this young man from Brazil. The sky is the limit …”
