British No. 1 Jack Draper moved to the last 16 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells thanks to a victory set to Jenson Brooksby.
After going 3-0 down to the opening set, Draper grabbed his way back into the match in impressive style as he finished a 7-5 6-4 victory over America, who is making a comeback this year after an extended interruption.
Draper will now face the third American seed Taylor Fritz in the fourth round.
“I felt safe. Brooksby is someone who makes life very difficult for players and I really didn’t know what to expect. He didn’t play for a while, I haven’t seen him play,” Draper said Sky Sports Tennis.
“It wasn’t the purest performance on my part. I have a lot that I can improve and a lot of chances I have missed, but that is tennis, you can’t play your best all the time, and I’m happy with the way I stayed calm and continued to win the victory in the end.”
Following 4-2 and at Brooksby’s service, Draper threw his record on the floor, but followed his explosion by winning the next three points as he fought his path again in the match.
The victory continued with another promising Draper campaign, which reached the fourth round of Australian Open and the final in Doha, where it was beaten by Andrey Rublev.
“I’ve played him twice and twice went to me,” Draper added.
“He is a warrior and competitor and I knew he would like his revenge and I am glad I was able to care for and enter.
“I feel physically well, mentally well. We’ve seen a lot of senior players come out earlier this week because the conditions are so difficult.
“I feel like hitting the ball well, but sometimes it won’t get out of the rocket the way I want it. I accept it and I hope the next round can take things a little better.”
Meanwhile, Jamie Murray made history by becoming the first Briton, and only the second current player, who played 1,000 in pairs in his career.
The 39-year-old marked the case in style while he and partner Adam Pavlase defeated Ariel Behar and Robert Galloway in a group of connection.
Murray, who played his first match at the Douboles ATP Tour along with brother Andy at Nottingham 19 years ago, said: “Something a thing I’m proud of and I think it shows longevity, being able to play in the tours at the time and still going.”
Cartal continues to win the race with direct wins
Lucky British loser Sonay Cartal continued her winning competition in Indian Wells with a direct victory over Pole Kuddermemeta to reach the fourth round.
