Your guide to what the 2024 American elections mean for Washington and the world
The American Senate on Friday evening approved a bill to avoid a government closure as a small part of the Democrats abandoned their resistance to the Republican-backed mass.
The Senate voted 54-46 to continue funding the government, just hours before a closure began.
Republican Senator Rand Paul voted against Mass, while Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Angus King King, who determines with the Democrats, helped to pass it.
In a previous important procedural vote, some Democrats helped Republicans push the measure, which will fund the Federal Government by September 30th. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, along with eight other Democrats and King leaning with the Republicans in bringing the so -called continued solutions with a final vote.
Republicans control the Senate, but demanded a “supermails” to approve the procedural vote, which overcame a potential Philibrant. The draft law now goes to President Donald Trump’s table for signature.
The final votes capture a week of tense talks among the Democrats, who tried to join after a strategy to negotiate with the Republicans. Although they control the two chambers of Congress, the Republicans lack a supermails and needed help from the whole line to bring the draft law to a vote.
The Republican Law includes the provisions that Democrats are not satisfied. Some Democratic lawmakers expressed concern that Trump gives a lot of space to approve his agenda over the next six months. However, the Democrats did not want to blame for a closure of the government, which the President and the Republicans explained that they would do.
Schumer had initially pushed him hard against the ban on the ban, but turned his position and helped to persuade others in his group to vote in favor of the mass.
There was a danger that Trump and close adviser Elon Musk use a closure as an executive clip, Schumer argued, pointing out that Musk and the so -called Government Efficiency Department can speed up their cost reduction with less control over their power.
Trump praised Schumer for supporting the draft law: “I appreciate Senator Schumer and I think he did the right thing, indeed.
Schumer’s support for the bill paved the way for other Senate Democrats to chase the lawsuit.
After the procedural voting, Senator Dick Durbin, an old Democrat, said “the last thing to do is to plunge our country in further chaos and unrest by closing the government” while Trump and Musk are “taking a sawmill with the federal government’s workforce and illegally freezing federal funds”.
Shaheen said it would be “playing in the hands of the Republicans” with a closure would give Musk and Trump “uncontrollably power to continue dismantling the federal government.
However, Schumer was criticized by several in the party to do so, especially at home.
Prior to the Friday vote, Hakeem Jeffries, the High Democrat in the room, said his group was “strong opponent with the partisan Republican spending law”, saying that Trump and Musk presented a “false choice” between the gap and a closure of the government. But Jeffries refused to say if he had lost faith in Schumer.
Democrat representative Nancy Pelosi, the former chairman of the room, also received a slide in Schumer before the vote. “Let us be clear: it is not a good opportunity for the American people either. But this false choice that some are buying instead of fighting is unacceptable. “
Progressive Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday that “I hope the Senate’s Democrats realize that there is nothing smart for” their movement. “These games will not cheat on anyone.”
