Tiktok is closing his competition on Instagram, Tiktok notes, on May 8. Application for sharing photos launched in the testing in Canada, Australia and Vietnam last year.
The company is notifying Tiktok marks the users of its decision to retire the app and is directing them to Lemon8 owned by bytedance, which is not surprising given that the applications are quite similar and offer the same kind of functionality.
“We are excited to bring reactions from Tiktok notes to Lemon8 as we continue to build a dedicated space for our community to share and experience photographic content, designed to complement and improve Tiktok’s experience,” said a Tiktok spokesman in a statement to Techcrunch.
While Tiktok did not give a specific reason for closing the application, it is likely that the company would not see much adoption for Tiktok notes and is deciding to push Lemon8 instead, which had about 12.5 million active global users since December 2024.
In a notice to Tiktok notes users, Tiktok says the decision to close the “did not make the app” easily “. The notification encourages users to download and store TIKTOK record data and “continue to share your creativity into Lemon8.” Tiktok says that “Lemon8 is a lifestyle that offers an experience similar to Tiktok notes but with” even more features “.
Lemon8 began in Japan in 2020 and later expanded to markets throughout the US and Southeast Asia. The app is similar to Instagram and Pinterest, as it allows users to share shows, photo collections and browse content through “the following” and “for you” resources. Lemon8 offers users access to creative tools, filters, effects, stickers, text templates and more.
While Tiktok is pushing Lemon8 as an alternative to Tiktok notes, Bytedance has also tried to position the app as an alternative to Tiktok itself in the face of a potential US stop.
Last November, the company made it possible for users to enter Lemon8 directly with their Tiktok accounts and wrapped the ability for users to separate the photo content between app. The mass was seen as a way of bydance to relocate the creators to the new platform without having to force them to register separately if Tiktok would leave.
Soon forward, and Tiktok continues to promote Lemon8 in his app while facing a new April 5 detention term.
