Your guide to what the 2024 American elections mean for Washington and the world
Republican Senator Ted Cruz warned of a possible “bleeding” for his party in the mid -2026 mid -term elections if Donald Trump’s tariffs send the US economy to the recession.
The Texas Senator also predicted a “terrible” fate for the world’s largest economy if a full trade war explodes and Trump’s tariffs, as well as any vengeful measures for American goods, stay in the long run.
Typically an ally of Trump, Cruz’s comments in Podcast of the Judgment Friday, were the fiercest warning by a member of the President’s party that from his “ERATION Liberation Day” began the global market path.
Republican lawmakers have begun to worry about the effects of Trump’s tariffs on the economy and their party’s prospects to maintain control of two Congress Chambers in the mid-2026 term.
On Thursday, the Republican Chuck Grassley presented a draft law in the Senate, along with a Democrat, to reassess the Congress control of tariff policy. Under the proposed law, new taxes will expire within 60 days unless they are approved by the Congress, and there would be a mechanism for lawmakers to cancel fees at any point.
The support for the bill increased on Friday, while Republican senators Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, Jerry Moran and Thom Tillis signed as co-sponsors. The draft law is likely more symbolic than everything, but it points to the increase of disputes within the Republican Party as lawmakers worry about the effects of trade policy on the constituencies that rely on exports and hopes for re-election.
There were already signs of voter dissatisfaction this week, when a conservative supported by Elon Musk lost a Supreme State Court seat in Wisconsin to the Liberal Candidate. Republicans also underestimated their 2024 results in two Special Houses in Florida.
If Trump’s fee and any revenge fee remains in the long run and pushes the US into “a recession, especially a bad recession, 2026 would most likely be politically a bleeding.
Despite the 53-47 Republican majority in the Senate, “if we are in the midst of a recession and people are hurting badly, they punish the ruling party,” Cruz said.
Texan originating from Canada did not share the president’s assessment that tariffs would use “a flowering economy”. Instead, Cruz said there may be “a big economic boom” only if the US and every vengeful country lower their duties.
But if “every other country on earth” strikes the US with vengeful fees and the so -called Trump’s reciprocal taxes remain in place, “this is a terrible result,” the senator warned.
If the confrontation between the US and its trading partners escalates into a full trade war, “this would destroy work here at home and do true damage to the American economy,” Cruz said. It would also “have a strong growing impact on inflation”.
