Tiger Woods will design a new short course with nine holes near the masters, as part of a new partnership with Augusta National Golf Club.
Architecture firm Augusta National and Woods ‘Tgr Design will create the new course as part of the renovation of the Augusta municipal golf course, commonly known as “Patch”, located four miles away from the masters’ house.
The short course will be adjacent to the Municipal Golf Course with 18 Augusta holes, which is currently being renovated by Tom Fazio and Beau Welling and is expected to open in front of masters next April.
Woods was not present at Augusta National for Monday’s announcement, as he continues to recover from surgery after exploding his Achilles tendon last month, but appeared in video link to reflect on exciting partnership.
“Partnership with Augusta National Golf Club to serve its surrounding community is really special,” Woods said. “My passion for education and golf dates back to a long time, as is my relationship with Augusta National and the city of Augusta.
“This is a transformative opportunity to empower the next generation and to provide meaningful educational programming and access to entertainment and affordable golf. I am excited to work with Augusta National and see both projects come true.”
Moreover, the TGR of Woods Foundation will build a TGR teaching lab in Augusta, Georgia, which will provide access to science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (Steam) education and opportunities for young people.
Fred Ridley, chairman of the Augusta National Club and the Masters Tour, said partnership with the former world 1 will help enrich the entry into high quality educational programming and affordable Golf in Augusta.
“Today’s announcements mark an important milestone for Augusta and deepen our community connection with one of our biggest masters champions, Tiger Woods,” Ridley said.
“” We are grateful for the partner with the TGR Foundation and we jointly invest in the Augusta community. This partnership, in the TGR teaching lab, reflects our common interest in enhancing the access to high quality programming and affecting the next generation in a tangible way.
“At the heart of our struggle in the patch is a commitment to create an affordable and inviting golf experience. Equal importance will be decided to create opportunities to learn and love the game, as well as developing a golf industry employment pipeline.”
