The US has not told the EU what it wants to lift the trade tariffs, the European Commission said, after a two-hour meeting between the two parties, trade negotiators have made little progress.
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič met with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Monday to discuss how to remove the so-called reciprocal tariffs set by the US, along with steel, aluminum and car taxes, but the US side failed to determine its requirements.
“We need to hear more from Americans. We have to have a clearer idea of what their favorite results are in these negotiations,” EU spokesman Olof Gill said on Tuesday.
Gill said Šefčovič had repeated an offer to mutually remove all industrial goods tariffs.
“The EU is doing its part. Now, it is necessary for the US to determine its position. As with any negotiation, it must be a two -way road. With both parties bringing something,” he said.
The White House and the Department of Trade did not immediately respond to a comment request.
The US ranked a long group of complaints when it was imposed, then stopped, reciprocal tariffs in much of the world this month. But the calculations were based on the surplus of trade in goods between them and the EU was given 20 percent, based on the excess of goods of $ 235 billion in 2024.
Donald Trump has said the EU should buy more liquid natural gas, which Brussels has agreed in principle.
The US president has also attacked the EU not to buy enough cars and “non-tariff obstacles” that exclude American chicken rinsed with chlorine-based chemicals, and beef from livestock fed hormones. He has rode against VAT, and his digital regulation.
Within days of imposing the fees Trump threw them and only applied a 10 percent tax on almost all countries for 90 days, while encouraging partners to seek agreements to reduce tasks permanently.
But on Monday he also instructed officials to prepare fresh measures against semiconductor and pharmaceutical products. Šefčovič reiterated the importance of the transatlantic elastic supply chains in those sectors, Gill said.
Gill said the meeting was a “concentrated and concentrated” session, with zero tariff plan and global overload in steel and aluminum industries also included.
But he added that food safety standards were “Sakransan”.
“The Commissioner reiterated that the EU and the US share many challenges and can address them together for the benefit of both parties,” he said.
“The EU will continue to approach these talks in a constructive way, in order to identify areas of common interest. It is clear that significant joint efforts will be needed to achieve a successful result within the 90-day window.”
The EU has banned its vengeful tariffs in response to steel taxes and aluminum until July 14. He was still working on further measures for other tariffs, Gill said, if there was no agreement.
