Cameron Norrie escaped a match point and fought through illness to defeat the young Spanish Martin Landaluse in the first round of Madrid Open.
Norrie fought for shape over the past year, slipping to 91 in the world, and former British No. 1 had not won an ATP tournament from Indian Wells in early March.
He was not clear at his physically against 19-year-old Landalusion, but used his experience to secure a 6-7 (4) 7-5 6-4 victory.
Norrie later discovered that he has been fighting with illness, saying to heavenly sports: “There is a terrible time, but at least I have another day tomorrow to rest. Hopefully it will pass very soon.”
A match up and down without Norrie lose five consecutive 3-0 matches to the opening set and then fight again from 3-0 down to the second before the Landaluse closely miss a major preface at the point of match at 4-5.
Norrie seized his opportunity to force a crucial group and a wild game from his new opponent in 4-4 proved the change.
“Maybe one of my favorite victories,” said Norrie, who faces the 26th seed of Jiri Lehecka. “I felt absolutely terrible. I wasn’t sure I would play. I had no energy. I didn’t sleep at all last night.
“I started very low energy, still sleeping in court. I had to create my own energy. He actually played really well, I know he is a really good player, so I had to fight every point.”
Britain’s successful round was completed by an impressive 6-3 7-6 (2) victory for Jacob Fearnley qualification on Bu Yunchaokete, China, setting a collision with the 19th Tomas Machac seed.
