St Mirren kept their European qualification hopes alive with a comfortable 2-0 win over Dundee United in Tannadice.

Mikael Mandron opened the result for friends in the first half, with Jonah Ayunga signing the victory after the break.

The victory moves Mirren within two points of United, which currently sits in the fifth on the Premier League table – the last European country – with only two matches of the season left.

The hosts made two changes to the side they lost in Hibernian last week, with Krisijan Trapanovski and Glenn Middleton entering Jort Van der Sande and David Babunski.

Friends also made two changes for the team that defeated Aberdeen last Saturday, with Roland Idowu and Caolan Boyd-Munce replacing Oiss Smyth and the injured Mark O’hara.

Visitors were the first to threaten the seventh minute when Mandron sent a 25-Oborre curly, just posting home goalkeeper Jack Walton.

United engraved an opening of them when Will Ferry found Skipper Ross Docherty inside the St Mirren box, but the midfielder was rescued by St. Mirren Zach Hemming’s goalkeeper.

The hosts then went through the best option of the match so far in the 15th minute when Middleton found Sam Dalby with a cross crossing from the left, however, the attacker headed with the goal in his mercy.

Pendulum waved St. Mirren’s path again with Richard Taylor going before Walton had to make a great saving to keep an Ayunga shot out.

However, the home goalkeeper could not prevent Stephen Robinson’s side from taking the lead in the 31st minute. Ryan Alebiosu tried Mink on the edge of the united box and this time, the lower striker’s shot located in the lower corner of Walton’s net.

Three minutes after the resumption, the hosts had another excellent option when Dochery put the ball into Dalby but the attacker’s shot lost the target.

Dalby threatened again shortly after he took his head in a free ferry blow, however, Hemming drew an acrobatic savings to deny the front man.

United was obviously on the front leg now with Middleton sending a photo flying slightly.

St. Mirren finally produced an opportunity for them, but Alebiosu’s low blow was extremely rescued by the immersed Walton.

However, the home goalkeeper was taking the ball from his network in the 66th minute when Idowu found Ayunga, who defeated Emmanuel Adegboyega’s home defender before coming calmly to put friends again in the direction seat.

St Mirren should have done it three in the 78th minute, but Killian Phillips exploded.

What did managers say …

St. Mirren manager Stephen Robinson: “I thought the performance was extraordinary and it should have been more.

“All we have said is that we will try to continue winning football matches and see where he takes us.

“We just have to continue to perform. The pleasant aspect to me is that we deserved it, the performance was very, very good and some of the football were extraordinary, so we will just continue to do it and see where you take us.

“This is the highest points, I think, in modern history for St. Mirren. It is better than last year, so we continue to do it and we continue to grow and see where it takes us.”

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin: “It seemed like St Mirren had a little more energy and a little more freshness. I think this season is caught with one or two of us.

“I don’t want to remove anything from St. Mirren because they fully deserved victory today.

“Without making excuses, we have a lot of players not only in 100 percent playing through injuries. I think this has been visible in the last pair of matches.

“We have two massive games to come. Of course, there is not much time to recover. We know how difficult the task will be in the middle of the week and the next Saturday against a very good Aberdeen team.”

What is coming to the Scottish Prime Minister?
