2025 has been brutal when it comes to canceling our favorite shows.
Netflix cut ties with The girls5eva after you save it from cancellation. The musical comedy originally premiered on the Peacock in 2021 and followed four women who were part of a girl group. After becoming a one-hit wonder, the former friends reunited later in life to try and find musical success again.
The girls5eva was renewed for a second season, but Peacock did not pick up more seasons. The show moved to Netflix for season 3, which was ultimately its final season.
Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips, Paula Pell AND Renée Elise Goldsberry made up the main cast of the series. After the second cancellation, Philipps released an emotional statement.
“2024 has certainly been a nasty heartbreak. Some more painful than others, tbh. I am forever grateful for this incredible show and for these girls who became my5eva sisters, for Netflix giving us the opportunity to sing together a little longer, and for everyone at Universal and Peacock for rooting so hard for our show.” , the actress wrote on Instagram. . “And of course the genius of Meredith, Jeff and Eric and my patron saint Tina Fey.”
She continued: “I honestly don’t know how or what I would be without this show and the endless joy it brought me through the darkest time of my life. I really love what I do. and sometimes it feels almost impossible. anyway, isn’t that like all good things in life? I love you 5 eva❤️.”
Apple TV+ Sunny it was another big TV loss. Based on the 2018 novel The Dark HandbookSunny starred Rashida Jones as an American woman living in Japan who receives a home robot as a gift after her husband and son disappear in a plane crash.
“I wish there was a little more awareness of our show. Not gonna lie,” Jones said The Hollywood Reporter in September 2024 for hosting her now-cancelled show. “I think (Sunny) is finding his audience because people seem to like him and a lot of people talk to me about him. What (Apple) has is that they have really good taste and they make really good shows.”
The actress praised the streaming service for allowing a weekly release. “I know it’s old school and not everyone does it, but I think the (staggered release) format suits the show well,” Jones continued. “I’m sure there are some people who are waiting to start the show when all (episodes) are done because they’re used to that pace. But I feel like there’s a lot of little things thrown in along the way that you want to sit with for a while before diving in.”
Jones was also asked about questions that still need to be answered.
“It’s very hopeful and it’s built in that way, which I don’t think we’re spoiling anything for anybody by saying there are things you’ll want to know at the end,” she added. “Did you feel like you were hung over, did you feel like you were satisfied too?”
