Armie Hammer is looking back at the cannibalism allegations that ended his Hollywood career four years ago.
In early 2021, Call me by Your Name the actor was accused of rape by an ex and various unverified direct messages detailing vivid sexual fantasies were attributed to him. Hammer strongly denied the rape allegations and said his sexual encounters were consensual. A Los Angeles Police Department investigation into the allegations was closed in May 2023, and the actor was not charged.
Airing on the Wednesday, January 1st episode of Your Mother’s House podcast hosted by Christina Pazsitzy AND Tom SeguraHammer admitted it was a “wild time”.
“Covid was going on, people were locked in their apartment, people were miserable,” Hammer, 38, said. “All this was not happening. The world seemed to be falling apart. And people were deeply dissatisfied with their lives. And then there’s this weird story where this actor wants to kill and eat people, and suddenly everyone’s like, “Oh, that’s a lot more fun to focus on than the fact that I can’t leave the living room.” Everyone was saying, ‘Let’s look into this story.'”
He continued, “I think I was in full panic mode. There would be articles in the Punjabi Times about how I was a cannibal and all that stuff. I think in March of 2021 I was the fifth most searched person on Google in the world. And it was all negative.”
“Suddenly you’re left standing there naked in front of the world with all your tendencies or kinks being judged by the world,” Hammer added, appearing to have mastered at least some of the graphic messages attributed to him at the time. “That’s hard.”
After becoming a star after his role in Social Network and other major blockbusters, Hammer said he struggled to maintain his clean Hollywood image. At the time, Hammer was married to her Elizabeth Chamberswith whom he has two children, daughter Harper, 10, and son Ford, 7. He said his behavior on social media was in some ways a response to how he felt.
“I think that somewhere deep down, subconsciously, I wanted to be caught. So I had no connection to my image that was out there in public. Like, ‘Look at them, they’re like the Ralph Lauren family. They have the perfect life, the perfect house and the perfect kids,” Hammer explained. “I was like, ‘I feel like an outsider.’ I used to love the rope bondage pictures on my Twitter. It was like I was dog-whistling at them, if you will, and I wanted to get caught. People will say, “I don’t think he knows his Twitter likes are public.” I saw that and I said, ‘I know.'”
Hammer addressed the public response to his alleged direct messages and said his conversations had been taken out of context.
He said, “If somebody was picking up somebody’s bedroom conversations, especially if people were having some sex, and they were picking up the things they were saying, even if it was completely vanilla, and you read it somewhere else out of context, everybody would to go, ‘You guys are disgusting.'”
Hammer also admitted to fantasies about rope slavery, explaining, “I like the idea that you’re completely mine. I can do whatever you want, and you like it because you know you’re mine. This possession is somehow something.”
“It’s just fun to talk about… especially if you’re drunk, stoned, or at night texting and laughing to yourself,” he added. “Exactly, ‘I’m going to cut off your toe and keep it in my pocket so I can have a piece of you wherever I go. Ha ha ha.’ Then it’s read in the court of public opinion and everyone says, “You’re crazy.”
