The EU is threatening to limit any agreement to remove the red bar on the UK food and drink exports across the canal unless it receives long -term access to British fishing waters.
The perspective of a date of expiration in a so-called veterinary agreement with the UK-a main request of the Sir Keir Starmer work government-has been created to exercise a maximum lever in London in the negotiations on fishing rights.
Limiting the length of any veterinary agreement with the United Kingdom would create uncertainty for exporters, reducing the possible value of the agreement and adding pressure to the UK from the business to make an open agreement on Pisces.
Sensitive ISSUSE is one of the latest obstacles left after both sides are closed in a deal to “restore” relations five years after Brexit on a Samit on May 19th.
The center of the agreement is a pact of protection and security, though the United Kingdom also wants to strengthen the economy by reducing trade barriers raised when it left the Bloc.
Required controls on agricultural products such as cheese and beef are one of the biggest obstacles that Starmer’s government is seeking to remove.
Currently, Brussels insists on a panoply forms and physical inspections of sensitive products because the UK standards may differ from those of the EU.
This especially disrupts trade with Northern Ireland. To avoid a difficult border on the island, controls are imposed on the trade between him and the British continent.
The UK government is under pressure for British business to get a deal, with main UK supermarkets, including Marks and Spencer and J Sainsbury writing an open letter last month demanding that both sides reach an agreement.
Any agreement is likely to ask the United Kingdom to pursue EU standards and accept the implementation of the European Court of Justice.
The United Kingdom is the largest market for EU Agrifood exports in 2024, which accounts for 23 percent, or 54bn €. They increased by 2.2bn € that year.
The bloc imported € 15.4BN from the UK, about half of the UK food and drink exports.
While London argues that a veterinarian agreement would benefit more from the EU, member states oppose that the United Kingdom is in need of greater need because of its dependence on the EU market. “They are” requests “here,” said a diplomat involved in negotiations.
The Brexit agreement shorten the EU fishing rights in the UK waters with 25 percent over five years, but in June 2026 it will lose the entire approach unless a new agreement has been agreed. Diplomats said they expected a fish deal to last at least five years.
A British official informed about the negotiations said: “This is something that has been proposed, but I think it’s sure to assume that it will not be the final state. The business needs security and has to renegotiate things every few years does not help.”
The United Kingdom government said that “is not giving a proper comment to our discussions with the EU”, but added: “We are clear that we will always act in the national interest to provide the best results for the United Kingdom.”
The European Commission refused to comment.
