Your guide to what the 2024 American elections mean for Washington and the world
Tens of thousands of anti-trump demonstrators gathered in cities across the globe on Saturday, as the impact of tariffs and cuts on government agencies galvanized the first major wave of protest against the administration.
The gatherings came days after Trump increased the global economy using rarely called emergency powers to promote tariff growth in almost every country in the world, wiping trillions of dollars in market value.
Those who participated in the protests mentioned a list of administration policies, from aggressive trade taxes, vacation throughout the federal labor, the expulsion of legal immigrants, attacks on the transgender community, and the threats to occupy Greenland, and the so -called Efficiency of Elon Musk’s government.
Protesters also gathered in European cities including London, Lisbon and Paris, and demonstrated in front of a Tesla exhibition hall in Berlin. The electric vehicle manufacturer has been focused on protest against the chief executive of his billionaire, and there have been numerous attacks on vehicles and traders across the US
Protesters at the National Center in Washington – the largest meeting – held banners with slogans including “penguin against tariffs”, “Send Musk in March” and “Make my 401k great”.
Peter, who demanded that his surname not be used, said he had come from Annapolis to Maryland to attend the rally in response to what he saw as an “attack on democracy” by Trump and Musk.
Washington resident Maya, who also demanded that her identity be hiding, said she was protesting against the “billionaire oligarchy” and added that “fees damage the working class”.
‘Hands off!’ The movement, which organized protests in more than 1,000 cities and cities across the US, is supported by advocacy groups focused on everything, from abortion rights to climate change. It has sought to reach Americans throughout the political spectrum, however, paying more emphasis on economic issues, including tariffs, the market of shares that are plunged and fear of social security changes.
“This day of mass mobilization is our message to the world that we do not accept the destruction of our government and our economy,” read a digital leaflet for the gathering in Washington.

Organizers and Democrats have caught in Musk’s papopulation to activate protesters and voters. On Tuesday, his favorite candidate, Brad Schimel, was shocked in a Wisconsin Supreme Court race that was widely seen as a referendum on the controversial billionaire.
Protests on Saturday are the first large -scale demonstrations against the administration since Trump began his second term in January. The return of the president to the ruling has so far been welcomed by a silent response and largely disorganized by the left of America, unlike the mass riots, including the march of women, which greeted his first presidency.
Democrats, meanwhile, have been captured by factional fighting on how to respond to the administration agenda, which has made it difficult to present a coherent message or strategy.
The speakers at The Rally in Washington called on democratic and Republican representatives equally to use their powers in Congress to oppose Trump’s economic policies.
“The tariffs are not just mabecilic, they are illegal, they are unconstitutional and we will return this,” said Jamie Raskin, a representative for Maryland who led the democratic effort of blaming Donald Trump during the January 6 rebellion.
