Your guide to what the 2024 American elections mean for Washington and the world
The Trump administration is considering the sale of the headquarters in Washington of the FBI and the Department of Justice while continuing with its aggressive agenda of government cost.
The General Services Administration, which manages the US Federal Buildings, on Tuesday published a list of more than 440 properties considered “not essential to government operations”.
In addition to the FBI and Doj buildings, those of the Departments of Health and Human Services, agriculture, energy, work, housing and urban development were also on the list.
“GSA will consider non-essential assets for relocating from government ownership in a regular way to ensure taxpayers no longer pay for empty and unused federal space,” the agency said.
She added that “non-essential assets” cost more than $ 430 million a year to function, adding that their mood can bring more than $ 8BN.
“GSA is committed to being a smart administrator of taxpayers dollars by lowering the unworthy space and reducing costs,” GSA said, adding that the list was “subject to change”.
GSA supervises nearly 370m square meters of real estate, having sold more than 12M square meters over the past decade. The Biden administration announced in recent days that it intended to reduce its portfolio with an additional 3.5 million sq, saving taxpayers more than 1bn $.
The GSA announcement on Tuesday to reduce more than 80m square meters matches the much more aggressive efforts to reduce Elon Musk’s cost.
The so -called Government Efficiency Department, which the billionaire is leader de facto claims, has completed hundreds of rent across the US, saving taxpayers up to $ 660 million a year.
The legality of some of the conclusions has been challenged.
Musk has long ceased against the lack of frequency of the offices by federal workers, claiming that many buildings are largely empty due to distance work. President Donald Trump issued an executive order shortly after his inauguration forcing the government to return to the office in full -time.
Despite the latest Dage cancellations, Musk last week posted that there were “still * a lot of rent in unused buildings”.
On Monday, GSA summarized a scheme created to match federal workers with unused office space in government buildings, in an effort to better use free properties in part.
The FBI and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
