Before his unexpected passage on Friday, March 21 14-year-old Miller Gardner was looking at a bright athletic future.
Miller, the son of the former New York Yankees Brett GardnerHe died while on family vacation in Costa Rica last week. His preliminary cause of death was ruled as asphyxia “after a potential intoxication as it seemed apparently swallowing some food.” On Tuesday, March 25, CNN reported that Miller may have died of food poisoning.
The young man was a double sports high school athlete at the Pinewood preparatory school in Summerville, South Carolina. By AthleticMiller was a defender and a wide recipient on the school football team. When playing baseball, Miller was a pitcher and outfielder.
According to a Facebook post from the Bayboat team Pinewood B in April 2024, Miller went 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI in a game against Northwood Academy.

Brett and his wife, Jessica – who also shares a big boy, Hunter – issued a statement through Yankees announcing Miller’s death on Sunday, March 23.

We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, March 21.”
The statement continued, “Miller was a boy and a beloved brother and we still cannot understand our lives without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, family and friends. He lived his life to the maximum every day.”
Yankees also issued their statement after Miller’s death, accepting his connection with exclusivity during the course of his life.
“Words feel insufficient and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss,” the team’s statement said. “It was not only a brett that literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years – so did his wife, Jessica, and their two sons, Hunter and Miller. We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their family community and friends to mourn the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, darling. ”
Yankees’s statement continued, “Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our sustainable support as we understand their desire for intimacy at this time. May rest in peace.”
