Hackman and Arawaka were found dead inside Santa Fe, New Mexico, at home on February 26th. Arakawa, who was 65 years old, died of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease that can be contracted by rodents.
According to CNN and TMZ, the New Mexico Health Department conducted a risk assessment on the couple’s property on March 5, a week after their bodies were discovered, for the safety of the first response and others who had entered the property.
A report taken from the exits on Monday, April 14, said that dead rodents and rodent nests were discovered within eight buildings detached in the wealth of Hackman and Arakawa. Rodents and rodent feces were found in three garages, while the feces were also found in two casks and three spills.
The department’s health staff said the risk of exposure to Hantavirus in the couple’s primary settlement, which was considered clean, was low, CNN reported.

After the news of the death of Hackman and Arakawa were broken, the pair were mourned by their loved ones in a statement to The weekly. “It is very saddened that we announce the passage of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy,” noted the daughters of Hackman, Elizabeth AND Leslieand nieces Annie. “He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his excellent acting career, but for us he was always only dad and grandfather. We will miss us a lot and we will be destroyed by loss.”
