According to his memoir, “In Gad We Trust: A Tell-Some,” published Tuesday, Jan. 14, Gad, 43, claimed that he Love and other drugs The costar warned her not to participate in the musical-comedy production.
Gadi wrote: “As I jump back and forth to make episodes of The daily showI was also shooting a film called Love and other drugs … One day as Jake and I were driving home from the set in Pittsburgh, I asked him if I could play a demo of some new music I had recently done a workshop on in New York, hoping to get his advice whether I would take it or not. I have to continue it. He said, ‘Yeah, open,’ and I played the opening number.
Love and other drugsstarring Gyllenhaal, 44 and Anne Hathaway in the lead roles, began principal photography in Pittsburgh in September 2009. Gad played a supporting role in the story, which follows an affair with pharmaceutical salesman Jamie, with Maggie, a woman suffering from early-onset Parkinson’s disease.
Gad said in his book that Gyllenhaal, “laughed his ass off” while listening to “Hello!”, the opening number of the critically acclaimed stage production, before Gyllenhaal’s thoughts evolved.
“I skipped another song on the album and his face slowly went from joyful excitement to abject fear and terror,” Gad wrote. “He stopped the car and said, ‘Dude, you can’t do whatever this is. This will be very controversial. Who the hell wrote that anyway?’ I stopped the music and looked at him. ‘The South Park guys.”
Despite Gyllenhaal’s alleged misgivings, Gad spent 15 months portraying Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, created by South ParkS ‘ Trey Parker AND Matt Stone. Gad’s performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical in 2011.

The actor also wrote about having an absent father for most of his life, revealing how it affected his experience of fatherhood. (Gad has two daughters, Ava, 13, and Isabella, 10, with his wife Ida Darvish.)
“I really enjoyed the writing (of the book) and I hope that everyone who reads it takes away something that is useful and inspires them,” he told Us. “At least I hope they have a good laugh.”
