Archaeologists who dig in Central America recently discovered strange 2,400-year-old clay dolls in an unexpected place.
The discoveries, which were found at the top of the San Isidro of El Salvadori Pyramid, were published in an article entitled “of Dolls and Puppets: Prague Clay figures by San Isidro, El Salvador,” on March 5. Ancient mesoamerican dolls Date between 410 and 380 BC BC.
The pictures show the dolls that possess open open face expressions. The largest group dolls are about a long leg, and are “naked and without hair or jewelry”, while the smallest ones “are modeled with hair locks on their forehead and ear species in the lobes,” according to the study.
The researchers determined that the objects were dolls because of the holes in their heads, which the string could be easily adapted.

“The three largest figurines have articulated, adjustable heads, facilitated by the conical extensions in the neck and the bases that match at the base of each head,” the study described. “Each nest has two holes drilled up to the top of the head, and each neck extension has a horizontal hole and a shallow vertical channel on each side, allowing a string to pass through the neck and tie to the top of the head.”
The figurines may have served for a variety of purposes, the study argues, including “being effectively, puppets or dolls in re-showing certain scenes, both static and dynamic”.

Although the dolls were discovered naked, researchers believe they were once wearing costumes, as earrings for similar figures were discovered in Mesoamerican countries in the past.

Szymański also noted that the place of final doll rest at the top of the pyramid suggests that they may have been important.
“They can be employed in a variety of different shows before finally deposited as something really, really special,” the researcher said. “I would say a grave, but we don’t have the body.”
Although researchers are unclear how the dolls are used exactly, the pyramid excavation is still ongoing – and archaeologists are still seeking answers.
