A Hydraulic in the United Kingdom inadvertently discovered the ancient treasure as he walked through a pasture on a summer day – and now he is taking it auction.

David Dunn, a hydraulic from Sapcote, Leicestershire, discovered 50 coins dating from ancient Rome on July 19, 2023. Hoard, which was not published until this month, was found in a short walk away from Dunn’s house.

The discovery was announced in a February 6 press release by Noonans Mayfair, a London -based auction house. Dunn, who began the discovery of metals in 2023, took the hobby as a way to “go out in the fresh air after a long day working,” Noonans said.

Dunn was using a Deus 2 metal detector when he discovered ancient collection, which consisted of Antoninianus coin worth two denarii each.

“Something told me to go to the pasture field I had visited many times,” Dunn said in a statement. “After a few hours looking, I had a pale signal of 84 in Deus 2 using the relic program.”

“Then I found a Roman coin and another with my pinpointer in the same hole.”

Dunn said he was “so excited” that he immediately warned the farmer who owned the land and began digging.

“After we dug in about two legs, then it only snow from there over one area (four square meters) and we found 50 coins in total,” Dunn recalled. “Who knows what would happen if we continued to dig further!”

The earliest coins were undermined under Carausius, the Roman Emperor of Britannia from 286 to 293. The military commander seized power after the Karaus revolt.

The other coins were mined under Allectus, Diocletian and Maximian, which means that the “youngest” of coins dates back to the fourth century AD.

Leicester, the site of Leicestershire District, was a great city in Roman Britain, then known as Ratae Corieltauvorum. It is not unheard of that Roman facilities leave the area – Dunn said that a neighboring farm has a Roman villa on it.

“Many of the coins I found were in really good condition with perfect portraits – it was once in a finding of life!” he added.

The coins, which are going under the hammer on February 18, are expected to get $ 1,800, but Dunn says his mind is not in money.

“I’m not sure what to spend it,” he admitted. “Money doesn’t care about, just finding history is what I want. The farmer has had a few years rough since Covid, so I would like to give him most of the money if it could help in whatever way. ”

The discovery has also contributed to the study of coins in ancient Rome. Currency expert Noonans Alice Cullen said that one of the coin models, which is from the reign of Carausius, has been unknown so far.

“The first currency in the pile will be recorded in (a) new volume (around Roman coins) as a new variety which is very exciting!” Said Cullen. “This special coin is from the reign of Carausius (286-293) and is decorated with a Diocletian bust on one side and a woman standing on the other.”
