The World Happiness Report of 2025 was recently released this month – revealing that the US not only traces behind other countries in North America, but also some European countries.
The study, which is published annually by the Welfare Research Center at Oxford University, usually lists many Nordic countries. This year’s theme of this year is “The Impact of Care and Division on People’s Happiness”, according to the study.
Some factors, including inequality, generosity, freedom, longevity and perception of corruption, all contribute to the rankings – but a question about happiness is heavily weighed by researchers.
“Our global ranking of happiness is based on a single question that asks people to appreciate the quality of their lives on a 0-10 scale,” the page explains.

SH.BA has ranked low in the study in recent years, despite being ranked as the 11th country in 2011. The study also listed us as the 115th place, with the study seeking participants, “Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with your freedom to choose what you do with your life?”
Despite its low ranking of happiness and freedom, the US boasts a high GDP with $ 76,276 per capita and ranks fourth for GDP. SH.BA was also ranked 12th and 16th respectively on social support and generosity.
“The growing number of people who eat only is a reason to fall well in the United States,” the study notes, adding that the decline in Happiness and social trust in the US “explains much of the increase in political polarization and votes against the ‘system’.”

Finland, on the other hand, has ranked at the top of the World Happiness Report since 2018. The study credits “its available and high quality systems of health, education and social support”, and concluded that the inequality of well -being is low in the country.
“Our annual ranking of happiness is, once again, led by the Nordic countries, with Finland still first between them,” the main knowledge of the study concluded. “Nordic countries are also ranked in the main countries for the expected and current return of lost wallets.”
