Female athletes will be for the first time at the Olympic Games at the summer games 2028 in Los Angeles thanks to a great victory for women’s football.
The Olympic Women’s football tournament will be larger than the men’s edition for the first time in 2028.
This decision by the IOC board has contributed to increasing the core quota of the athletes for LA to 50.7 percent women and 49.3 percent men – 5,333 for women and 5,167 for men, said the IOC.
The gap is slightly closed when athletes are added to the LA program for the sports – with 322 female and 376 male competitors. These sports include cricket, flag football and lacrosse.
The groundbreaking progress for women’s athletes was first achieved by Kirsty Coventry on Wednesday as the elected president since their victory last month at an online board meeting in Lausanne. In June she will officially replace her mentor Thomas Bach and become the first female manager of the IOC in its 131-year history.
Two other teams of women were added in the water polo, so that the tournament in Los Angeles, each with 12 nations, will be the same with the men’s event. The boxing will have an additional weight class for women that corresponds to the men’s constellation of seven medal events.
“The message of gender equality is really important to us,” said McConnell, Kit McConnell, IOC Sports Director. “We really thank La 28 for supporting this. It is also central to your vision.”
Further additions are:
- When boxing, a new category to the weight weight of women was added to achieve gender parity.
- When rowing, the solo, the solo and the mixed double skulls will add a “Coastal Beach Sprint” event for men.
- When climbing sports, boulders and lead climbing will be separate events instead of composing themselves together as in the previous two Olympic appearances.
- Several sports add mixed team events, including archery, track (4×100 meter relay), golf, gymnastics, rowing and table tennis.
Case for changes
The headlines of the IOC was inequality because women’s football at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta debut with only eight teams – half as many as the men’s tournament.
The board confirmed a proposal that FIFA President Gianni Infantino unveiled last Thursday when he spoke at the annual conference of the European Football Department UEFA.
The case for changes became more convincing because the women’s football tournament is a first -class title in which the national teams send their best players.
Since Moscow last year in 1980 in 1980 to Moscow in 1980 there have been 16 men’s soccer teams.
The women’s constellation increased to 12 teams at the Olympic Games in Athens in Athens in Athens in 2004 to 12 years later in Beijing.
The FIFA and Infantino had repeatedly demanded equality with a women’s tournament with 16 teams that would have added around 70 additional players and team officials to cross the limits of the athlete accommodation rates for Olympic organizers.
The solution was to prefer women’s edition towards men and to further advance the IOC policy of gender parity at the Olympic Games, which were first reached in Paris.
Women and men who compete together
Golf and the 4×100 sprint relay on the route are among the events that will have mixed gender team events in Los Angeles for the first time.
You can find more new team events in artistic gymnastics, archery, coastal rudder and table tennis.
A new Olympic record of 351 medal events in 2028 will include 161 for women, 165 for men and 25 mixed events, said the IOC.
