Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, said on Wednesday that his state would submit a lawsuit that will question the authority of US President Donald Trump to impose extensive tariffs that triggered a global trade war.
The lawsuit will argue that Trump’s use of the international emergency management powers that tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China or a tariff of 10 percent on all imports is illegal. The law enables a president to freeze and block transactions in response to foreign threats.
Trump has offered many reasons for increasing the tariffs, also for the production of the US tariffs and the hiring of the illegal fentanyl in the country.
The move in California follows quickly changing tariff plans of the Trump administration. It is the first state to take legal action over the tariffs that were previously questioned in lawsuits in lawsuits caused by law firms for corporate owners and bourgeois freedom organizations.
According to Newsom, the tariffs in California have led to bloated costs and billions of dollars of damage, which has the largest economy among the US states and is a massive exporter.
“The illegal tariffs of President Trump lead a chaos in California families, companies and our economy – increase prices and threaten to work,” he said in an explanation. “We stand for American families who cannot afford to continue chaos.”
As with democratic legislators on Capitol Hill, California argues that the approval of the congress is required for the tariffs. The Democrats of the Senate were accompanied by four Republicans in a symbolic vote that Trump restored the tariffs at the beginning of this month, but Trump -Loyalisten lead the House of Representatives and made a similar vote there.
Trade in Canada
Newsom plans to discuss the lawsuit together with the California General Prosecutor Rob Bonta later on Wednesday in Central Valley, which is rich in farm. California is an agricultural power pack with many nuts, fruit and vegetables that the state grows for other countries.
The state will ask the court to block the tariffs immediately.
The press spokesman for the White House answered a question from CBC News and said that US President Donald Trump still believes that Canada should be the 51st state, but it could be “flexibility” when it comes to tariffs in the Canadian car sector.
The announcement on Wednesday will take place days after Newsom had asked the countries to export the state’s exports of retaliation duties and measures, in which it was found: “California is not Washington, DC”, no business has yet been announced.
California, which has its economy in relation to the gross domestic product, is only smaller than a handful of countries, borders in Mexico and also enjoys a significant trade relationship with Canada. Trump expressed complaints about the updated trilateral trade agreement, which he signed in 2019 with Mexico and Canada.
