Detailed planning of a potential “coalition of the willing” peace security mission to Ukraine is expected to begin this week among Western military commanders, says the Canadian general, who is responsible for overseas and domestic operations.
The concept of peace -resisting force is fulfilled internationally with skepticism, while Ukraine and Russia are indirectly meet to hammer up a limited ceasefire.
Lt.-gen. Steve Boivin suggested that Canada make a contribution, but it is possible if the troops that train the Ukrainian armed forces are reinforced to secure peace.
He said CBC News that a preliminary meeting of high -ranking military commanders from 28 nations who have expressed the willingness to contribute to the group – to be used in the event of an armistice – took place in Great Britain last week.
Boivin took part in the discussions.
The indirect ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine began on Monday in Saudi Arabia, an effort mediated by the United States. In principle, the two countries faced a one-month strike for the energy infrastructure after US President Donald Trump had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin last week and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but there is uncertainty about how it becomes effective.
A few weeks ago, British Prime Minister Keir Starrer proposed a peacekeeping that consisted of several NATO countries, including Canada.
At the beginning of March, Defense Minister Bill Blair said before the federal election call on Sunday that Canada was “ready and able to contribute troops if there was an armistice.
“I will emphasize that we do not know what the conditions of such an armistice could be. So we work a number of assumptions and develop emergency plans,” said Boivin. “The general goal is to offer decision -makers options.”
Trump’s special representative, Steve Witkoff, rejected the Starrer peace security plan last weekend as a “attitude and pose”.

At the same time, several British media reported on Monday that the best British military commander – cited anonymously – that the prime minister came out of himself. They said that detailed planning were not completed by April 20 – the deadline of the White House for an armistice.
It is obvious that it will be a fight for Canada to make a contribution.
Canada is in the middle of a choice and should agree to the new government to use peace troops, the reality cannot be seen many Canadian troops.
The military has difficulties to refill the rows after the Covid 19 pandemic and a crisis of sexual misconduct that affects a number of high-ranking commanders.
There are up to 400 Canadian troops in the training of the Ukrainian armed forces, and Boivin said one of the possibilities that are considered for his headquarters, be it to roll up some or all for a peace safety mission.
“The instructions that I gave to my team is: Let’s start with what we already have on site,” said Boivin, referring to troops abroad.
The training of the Ukrainian soldiers – fundamental recruits, doctors and tank teams – was a marquee topic for the liberal government because it underlined its support for the competitive country. More than 32,000 Ukrainian troops were trained as part of Operation Unifier, and their continuation was often a major question of the Zelenskyy government.
Boivin said one of the reasons why the training of troops may have to be re-planned is that the army is full of its commitment to building and leading a NATO brigade in Latvia.

“We will not influence our contribution in Latvia,” said Boivin. “We committed ourselves to NATO.”
He said that Allied military planners had started to examine the size and composition of potential peacekeeping and the heavily armed force.
This is a legitimate concern, since Allied secret services show estimates that show that there are around 700,000 Russian troops in and in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian military has over a million soldiers under weapons.
The size of the required force could be massive
In a recently carried out analysis for the Center for Strategic and International Studies based in Washington, Benjamin Jensen wrote that the size of the peacekeeping may be massive in view of the approximately 2,100 km long front line.
“The security forces that are necessary to really protect peace in Ukraine could be as great as the entire military of Greece or Spain,” Jensen, a high -ranking scholarship holder with the Think tank, wrote in an online comment on February 25th.
“In other words, peacekeeping in Ukraine has the potential to bring former NATO missions in the Balkans to the eBergation both in size and in its complexity.”
It could – estimated – are somewhere between a few thousand soldiers up to 100,000, a force that would also have to be armed and supported.
“In order to ensure security, this force must not only act as a deterrent, but also have the ability to combat war to counteract potential Russian Fait Sorgi Attacks along the border, “wrote Jensen.
“And this force requires additional air, marine and space assets to cover air and maritime corridors Russia to start a future preventive attack.”
Anthony King, professor of the University of Exeter’s strategy and security institute, suggested that the underlying assumption was always that every peacekeeping in Ukraine would support us.
“It probably looks that the European nations as a coalition will be able to put together a credible force, and this could be sufficiently good in the White House so that the president provides additional support,” said King in an explanation of the talks in Saudi Arabia.
“The American infrastructure support would at least be essential, so that peacekeeping could use the impressive air defense systems of the United States. This would be important to secure Ukraine’s security in the future.”
