Roula Khalaf, the FT editor, chooses her favorite stories in this weekly newsletter.

It feels completely strange to live in Zurich. My young son and I moved here from Glasgow during the pandemic because almost all my art commissions collapsed – they were related to public spaces and performance. Incidentally, I had just done an interview for a permanent teaching work at the University of the Arts. In this old massive yogurt factory, and along with the College of Art, where I now learn to have design, dance and music. It is a beautiful mix of people rushing around. In Switzerland, everyone speaks of “percentage”; You meet someone and quickly understand their entire configuration with that percent of them working. I learn 50 percent, which is great for an artist – you have enough room for your solo career.

When we came to the city, we went by making a list of things you could do for two francs. We found a beautiful old -fashioned old -fashioned trip that was 50 cents a trip. Then at the Transisa store, where you can buy the most absurd specific walking equipment, they also get ridiculously comfortable chairs and hot chocolate from a SFR1.50 car.

My son and I want to go to Bruno Weber Park. Likes like a meta-there is a short train trip away from the city. There are very detailed sculptures from Weber that are up to 18 million high, all thrown into concrete; They are incredible imaginative. There is a bridge with a dragon head, there are creatures with wings. Extremely is extremely out of normal.

Then it is the zoo that has the most wonderful wonderful elephant home. Elephants have pools; Just just full luxury, absolute. And on the side is a special part of the “hotel” for naked mice mice. There is a piece of glass where you look; They have smart social structures, where they share care for young people. As they look so disgusting, you end up with this strange mixed reaction because they have superior, intuitive ways to manage their communities.

There are some wonderful parks in the hills around the city. We live near Käferberg, meaning Beetle Mountain. On the other hand there is oerlico, which is essentially large forest hills. Everyone is running for the lake here, but I’m absolutely in love with the river. Banks are approximate and ready, and you simply stumble on the rocks and the riverbed. Extremely is extremely fast, so you have to respect it. The next thing to know is peanutwhich are like lidos. One of my favorites is in Wollishofen. They are cheap and beautifully designed. They are very socialists. Every person’s class enjoys peanut.

When I have a guest here, I take them to two places. One is Nonam, the North America’s local museum. You think, what the hell are you doing in Zurich? The collection is amazing. There are all these videos where indigenous people talk about what they are doing. It is not presented as if they are in any other strange world; They are given the same respect that contemporary artists would be in New York or London. On the other side of the lake, you have Rietberg, a beautiful cottage in a park with art Gandhara, Buddhas and many statues of South East Asia. You can’t help but feel scared, though there is a de-hierarching agenda-it still simply destroys authority.

Wise food, there is a Neapolitan cafe called Caredda with all these over-the-top sculptural pastes. They wrap them in the most beautiful pink paper with gold string. I also love Stadelhofen Station, who has a small piazza in front of him with a beautiful fountain and outdoor cafes. In Wipkingen, the area in which I live, Nordbrücke will die – it’s like a hip berlin cafe – and for bread and cinnamon and loving service, I go to the flughafebeck.

One of my favorite stores is Music Hug, who has vinyl records and leaf music on the first floor; Upstairs there are piano, violin and guitar, and everyone is busy playing music. She sold tickets to Cabaret Voltaire in Dada’s time. Second-hand stores or “Brockie” are also a big thing-if you want glass containers or crystals, they are all paved in different colors. Another thing I want is the tenant. You can be creative and learn to do it in seconds. I go to Exagon.

The thing about Zurich is everything about the lifestyle. If you were just visiting the city, you would just think it’s like, whatever. But the people living here are so smart with the way they use the city. Oh god, it’s effective.
