Ikea wants to use her new store on London’s Oxford Street to attract more city housing clients as part of a strategic change to expand beyond giant warehouses outside the city.
The store, which will open on Thursday, is part of a plan to make the brand more “accessible” to clients living in cities, according to the United Kingdom Chief Peter Jelkeby. Tolga Öncü, Operations Manager, said it was a sign of retail seller’s ambition to “bring IKEA to the place where customers live, work and associate.”
The building ranked in Class II, once the Flag Unit of the retailer with Topshop retail, has three floors and the equivalent of 5,800 square meters of retail space. About half of the 6,000 on -screen products, storage boxes they lay, teddy toys and pots can be purchased immediately, while the larger furniture items will be available for home distribution or clicking and collection.
IKEA opened its first UK city shop in West London in 2022, after experimenting with various formats such as planning studios, including one in Central London that then closed.
The first from its smaller domestic city stores were opened in Paris in 2019, followed by Mumbai and Stockholm in 2022, in an effort to reach new customers while purchasing habits changed.
Opening is a help for Oxford Street, which has been hit hard by moving to online purchases and the lack of tourists during the pandemia.
Large shops owned by stores such as Debenhams and House of Fraser are closed. Meanwhile, dozens of smaller units were filled by souvenirs and caramel vendors until the local council began to expel many in 2023 for non -payment of property taxes.
Sadic Khan, the chairman of London, said IKEA’s opening was a “London faith vote in our economy and our plans to renovate the Oxford road”.
In February, he launched an Oxford Street pedestrian consultation, arguing that he would help the alley compete with other global shopping sites.
In the United Kingdom, IKEA employs almost 12,000 staff, has 21 full -sized stores, a sequence and collection site, and three law and order sites. The first store opened 1987 in Warrington, northwest in England.
The new Oxford Street store, whose opening was postponed twice due to the complex work of renovation, will include a Swedish “Deli” who sells his famous as well.
