How it happens7:17Top scientist Stiftbrief calls for the end of “attack on US science”.
Almost 2,000 doctors, researchers and scientists have signed an open letter To demand an end to the “wholesale attack on the US science” of the Trump administration, what they describe when the Trump administration of the administration of the Trump government describes.
The letter, which was written by 13 scientists from disciplines such as medicine, climate science and business, asks the Americans to demand their congress, to protect scientific funds and integrity.
The signatories, all members of the national academies of sciences, engineering and medicine, wrote that the Trump government “destabilizes this company by accepting the financing for research, developing thousands of scientists, removing access to scientific data and changing researchers”.
Financing the biomedical research of the National Institutes of Health (Nih), which supports more than 300,000 scientists, was reduced by billions of dollars.
Environmental sciences were also targeted with More than 1,000 scientists and other employees are stored From the research office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The administration also plans to Reduce the workers of the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA) Up to 20 percent, which could seriously influence the weather forecast.
Dr. Steven Woolf was one of the signatories. He is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He spoke to How it happens Host Nil Köksal about the letter.
What is really at stake at the moment?
The problem we deal with here is that the policy of the Trump government has significantly worsened the functions of our government (and) various agencies.
But the area that affects us as a scientist is that there is basically a numerous research capacity, not only within the federal government, but also at universities and research centers across the country.
The United States has invested in building their research capacity for about 80 years.
Within a few weeks, the Trump government has overridden many of these functions.
We see mass layoffs in the Department of Health and Human Services. What do you hear from your colleagues about what happens there?
Today’s layoffs are apocalyptic in our area. These are important agencies that are responsible for the health of the Americans, and large amounts of employees who have spent their career to improve the health of the Americans are sent.
There are such … who would say that there are bloated bureaucracy, (that) these things have to be cut back, so they are happy to hear what they believe and they believe that the amount of research, like their and the research of their colleagues, has been too much over the years. What would you like to tell you?
I think there is a fair argument that there are inefficiencies in many of these agencies.
But the way they tackle inefficiency is a much more targeted approach. My analogy is when you have a car engine that runs inefficient, usually take it to a mechanic for a melody.
In this case, take up a slanter and knock the engine, which does not contribute to improving efficiency, and now the car no longer works.
There was very little attempt to actually improve the efficiency of these agencies. Instead, it was simply dramatically reduced to reduce it dramatically and (that has) Basically made it dysfunctional.
I think it is important for the listeners to understand that two parts stand.
One of them is that these massive cuts turn off the spigotes for research, so that fewer money and staff are available to carry out research.
But the second part is censorship. Here the government imposes ideological and political agendas that affect research questions that scientists can examine which methods they can use to carry out their studies and … the words they can use in reporting on the results.
The very important principle of scientific independence that threatens researchers at the world value in this case.
Have you heard an answer or reaction … that people get this message?
It is currently a heavily polarized country.
If people like me consider the direction in which the Trump administration takes in, there is a large sector of the population who is not satisfied with such comments.
But on the other hand, there is a large sector of Americans who appreciate the fact that someone actually speaks.
In many of these research institutions and universities, there is a climate of fear where the leadership is in a very difficult place and does not affect. Try to keep your heads low and avoid the administration, since the government exerts a lot of financial and legal pressure at universities and other research institutions.
As a result, there was a relative silence in research and in the scientific community.
We have certainly seen here in Canada … Stories about professors and researchers who leave the United States for Canada. Do you expect more to leave your country for our country?
I think so. I think it happens very quickly. I personally know colleagues who do this. It applies to experienced researchers who have to leave the country in order to continue to carry out independent scientific research.
But it also happens for our young people who are interested in a career in the sciences who change their opinion about the graduate school in the USA and a different look at their training.
What do you think will change the opinion of people who do not agree to you at the moment?
The current dynamic will only change if the American public begins in a graceful way, as it affects it.
As long as it is in an agency in Washington, DC, a far away, distant problem, it is easy for them to release it as irrelevant political news and to marginalize the scientists or other workers from these agencies or the researchers at universities who are regarded as an elite and are separated from everyday life.
But when it comes to burdening yourself if your child cannot receive the care that receives it, the medical mistakes in your hospital are increasing because the agency that no longer exists for improving the results no longer exists and when health trends such as the crisis on mental health that exists in American adolescents, and other important threats for health and well -being, which are on the rise Guidelines that can motivate themselves to publish themselves on the publication and publication to motivate themselves and to deal with the publication.
