The US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Vatican City for the funeral of Pope Francis met on Saturday one to one in a basilica broadcast by marble to try to revive the difficult efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Zelenskyy said the meeting could prove to be historical if it delivers the kind of peace he hopes for, and a spokesman for the White House called it “very productive”.
The two guides who bend near each other near each other without helper around them when they were sitting in the basilica of St. Peter spoke for about 15 minutes, according to Zelsssky’s office. Pictures of the meeting were published by Kyiv and Washington.
It is the first meeting between the two presidents since an angry encounter at the Oval Office in Washington, DC, in February and comes at a critical time of the negotiations to end the war.
“Too many people die,” writes Trump
After Pope Francis’ funeral service at the St. Peter’s Square on board the Air Force One climbed and left Rome. During his time in the air, he published a social media post that took on Russian President Vladimir Putin hard tone.
“There was no reason for Putin to shoot rockets in civilian areas, cities and cities in the past few days,” Trump wrote about the social of truth. Twelve people were killed on Thursday when a rocket compensated by Russia met a Kyiv apartment block.
“I think he may not want to stop the war, he only takes me with me and has to be treated differently by ‘banking’ or ‘secondary sanctions?’ Too many people die !!!
Trump’s post was a departure from his usual rhetoric, which recorded the toughest criticism of Zelenskyy while talking positively about Putin.
In a article on the social media platform Telegram, Zelenskyy wrote: “Good meetings. We discussed one to one. We hope for a result of all the things that have been talked about.”
Zelenskyy thanks Trump after the ‘symbolic’ meeting
The President of Ukraine said these topics include: “The protection of our people’s life. A complete and unconditional ceasefire. A reliable and permanent peace that will prevent the war from recurring.”
Zelenskyy added: “It was a very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historical when we achieve common results. Thank you, President Donald Trump!”
On a photo published by Zelenskyy’s office, the Ukrainian and US leaders sat in a hall of the basilica, about half a meter apart, and supported each other in conversation. There were no helpers in the picture.
In a second photo, Zelenskyy, Trump, the British Prime Minister Keir Starrer and French President Emmanuel Macron were shown in a narrow gaudy. Macron had his hand on Zelenskyy’s shoulder.
After Trump and Zelenskyy met in the basilica, the two men joined the funeral ceremony for Pope Francis, who was chasing peace, including in Ukraine, a motif of his papacy, on the St. Peter Square on St. Pet, who had the persecution of peace.
The Italian cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who gave the sermon at the funeral service, remembered how Francis did not stop raising his voice to demand negotiations to end conflicts.
“War always leaves the world worse than before: it is always a painful and tragic defeat for everyone,” said the cardinal.
Differences above the territory
Trump has depressed both Moscow and Kyiv to agree to an armistice and peace agreement. He had previously warned that his government would go away from her efforts to achieve peace if the two sides did not agree to a deal soon.
After a round of the shuttle diplomacy this week, differences between the position of the Trump White House to peace talks and the attitude of Ukraine and its European allies occurred, according to documents from the conversations received by Reuters.
Washington proposes a legal recognition that the Crimea, the Ukrainian Peninsula, Russian Territory, something that Kyiv and its allies in Europe say in 2014, proposes a red line that they will not cross.
There are also differences in how quickly the sanctions against Russia would be canceled if a peace agreement would be signed, what kind of security guarantees would have Ukraine and how Ukraine would be financially compensated.
Trump and Zelenskyy had a rocky personal relationship. At her Oval Office meeting at the beginning of this year, Trump accused the Ukrainian leader “Gambling with the Third World War”.
While the United States is trying to drive Ukraine towards an armistice, Russia seems to go in the opposite direction. Terence McKenna from CBC examines the latest steps and why some believe that Vladimir Putin could try to manipulate Donald Trump through his billionaire real estate buddy.
Since then, Kyiv has tried to repair relationships, but the barbens continued.
Zelenskyy said Trump was trapped in a “disinformation bubble” that Moscow preferred, while the US leader Zelenskyy accused of wearing a footage in a peace agreement and making “inflammatory” statements.
However, Trump demands Zelenskyys Buy-in to achieve his declared ambition to bring a quick peace between Russia and Ukraine, while Kyiv needs Trump to put pressure on Moscow, to water down some of the most stressful conditions that have set for an armistice.
At the Oval Office Meeting, a reporter of a conservative US news network Zelenskyy was not to respect the opportunity by not wearing a suit.

Since the beginning of the Russia’s full invasion, Zelenskyy has falsified suits in a military style and said that it was his way of showing solidarity in his country to defend Ukraine.
In Rome, Zelenskyy was wearing a dark shirt on Saturday, which was buttoned up to his neck without a tie and was crowned with a dark styles.
