Lando Norris presided over the first session of the 2025 Formula 1 season in the Grand Prix Australian after British novice Oliver Bearman suffered a big clash.
Norris had played on Thursday in his status and McLaren as pre-season favorites, but sparked some of the performances that many expect to give a great opportunity to look for his F1 girls’ title.
He decided for a time of 1: 17,252 on the champions of the reign constructors at the time of closing the hearing to complete 0.149 clear by Carlos Sainz, who impressed Williams after his move from Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton was only the 12th at his first weekend session for Ferrari, ending the tenth of a second after his teammate Charles Leclerc, who was the third.
The seven-time world champion, the first appearance of Ferrari’s practice was the center of attention after his Mercedes move, told Team Radio that he was “fighting” to return SF-24.
Oscar Piastri was four tenths away from his teammate McLaren Norris in the fourth, while Max Verstappen was marginalized further in the fifth for Red Bull as he began his search for a fifth consecutive driver.
Alex Albon supported Sainz’s speed taking the sixth for Williams, while George Russell ended up the seventh for Mercedes, surviving a late fear as he rolled after driving in the bar at turn 4 and managed to stop his car just a few obstacles.
Bearman, who is traveling in his first full campaign by making three appearances in the race last season, triggered the second from two red flags during the session as he ran over the gravel at turning 10 and then crashed into the obstacle after failing to recover his Haa’s control as he got out of the trap.
Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle said: “He just lost its peak, he ran wide. I think he didn’t know him as fast as he should, it was probably more or less Gung-Ho and thought he would save him.
“It was a little convinced and it will have knocked part of this faith.”
This interruption, along with an early delay to allow the gravel to be removed from the track, where it was started by cars that ended the line in turn 6, meant that almost a third of the long session was lost.
Liam Lawson, who is launching his first full campaign along with Verstappen in Red Bull after previously featuring 11 competitions for Junior Squad Racing Bulls over the past two years, survived his early fear after kissing the wall at turn 9 before finally ending in 16th place.
Isack Hadjar ended up the highest of the six rookies, taking the ninth for racing bulls. Jack Doohan of Alpine, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Gabriel Bortoleto of Sauber were 13th, 14th and 15th respectively.
