Ben Whittaker is “humble” by Liam Cameron but can rediscover his “amazing talent” under the new coach Andy Lee in the match, says Johnny Nelson.
Whittaker fled to a wheelchair as he and Cameron were dramatically collapsed by the ring in their first period in October, which ended in a divided decision draw, and their rivalry will be resolved in a second war on Sunday, Live in Sky Sports.
Reflecting on Whittaker’s performance in Saudi Arabia, Sky Sports Nelson expert believes that the Olympic medallist of the silver “neglected what he does so well” but is supporting the new Lee coach to bring the best from the 27-year-old.
Nelson told Sky Sports: “I’m very sure Andy Lee has said to him” You have an amazing talent, make sure you use as much as possible. “
“So I think he has taken a serious approach from what we’ve seen.
“Mental approach when you get into the ring – it makes or ruins a warrior, and I think of it, he knows it’s talented, sometimes you can escape with yourself. And that’s what he did.
“The performance I saw in Saudi by Ben, he boxed as if … ‘a deal that did this, I will steal the show” and he neglected what does well.
“He neglected this, and by doing this he almost paid the price. That’s why he is humbled and that is why he should mentally stay at the point, so that he does not happen again, because if he spends Sunday night and he begins to take some amazing victories again, what stops him from developing amnesia and doing it again at a higher level?
“So if that happened, it’s better to happen now than later below the line when there is much more in discussion.”
Macklin: Whittaker can handle match pressure
Sky Sports friend’s expert Matthew Macklin believes Whittaker will handle the big expectations on his shoulders before a high stock match.
“I think there was an element of him by underestimating him (Cameron). I think he probably trained a lot or got a little wrong,” Macklin said.
“He got tired very quickly, he was being discovered – who was alarm, really.
“I don’t think it would happen in this war. I think it will have the right amount of fear, the right amount of nerves. The pressure will bring it.
“In many ways, his career is on the line in terms of what he predicted to continue and achieve, to be a star.
“That’s in line here.”
