Football Union Chief Rugby Bill Sweeney has survived a voting of distrust held at a special general meeting, where he faced a call for his Board’s break.
The game of the English Rugby community had collected enough support by January to cause a special general meeting, where a resolution was presented demanding that Sweeney be fired from the board.
The first SGM of RFU in 20 years took place in Twickenham on Thursday, where the motion to remove Sweeney received 206 votes, with 466 voting against its departure and 36 abstention.
RFU leaders were not obliged to act if the motion was to be passed, though Sweeney’s position would have been significantly weakened if the vote went against it.
“This is not a time to argue, but to pull together,” said temporary chairman Sir Bill Beaumont. “The time for separation has passed. Now is the time to join after an opportunity to renovate the English Rugby.
“Let’s decide after this period of fighting and modernize unity. Let’s go back to focus on very positive in our game.”
SGM presented a mix of RFU members who also participated in virtually participating. From the general membership of the RFU with about 1,300, 672 votes cast.
Beaumont described the result of the vote as “pronounced”.
