The Cadillac F1 Dan Towriss chief says the team will not be “simply grabbing” any American driver as they prepare to join the Formula 1 network in 2026.
Was confirmed in November 2024 that Cadillac offer – from US car giant General Motors and US Global Group – had acquired Formula 1 approval.
Given a key factor after the team’s acceptance in the sport is their perceived ability to increase the popularity of F1 in the United States, they are expected to sign at least one American driver for their debut campaign.
Towriss, speaking while Twg launches a motorsports arm he will lead, says he is inclined to find an American driver for the team, but that will be followed by a “proper” process.
He said Sky Sports News: “I think we would like to see an American driver in Formula 1, but we certainly want to make sure we do it properly.
“I think it is essentially important for that person to be decided for success. It won’t be a process of taking an American and climbing it after the wheel. We want to do it properly, and so more to come to that. “
America has a long history of drivers in F1, but has not produced many years in recent years, with Logan Sargeant losing his country in mid -2024 after failing to show signs of improvement during his second season in Williams.
With a return to the network for Sargeant is unlikely, any US signature would lack the F1 experience, which Towriss admits that they would seek knowledge in their other country.
He said: “Of course I think an experienced driver is essential for creating a new team from that point of view, so we are definitely seeing an experience in the driver’s tandem.
“There are a number of American drivers who have experience in the lower formula series. So this is not Formula 1, but there are drivers who know the tracks and have been in the lower formula series, they grew there.
“So we will work on this and we will see what comes out.”
Towriss has been an instrumental figure on the street of the Cadillac team to F1, with his replacement of Michael Andretti last September as the offer figure that seems to be a major factor.
Just 10 months before approaching Cadillac’s entry, Formula 1 had rejected what was essentially attempted entry of the same team, while it was led by Andret and under the name of his eponymous team.
Explaining his role, Towriss said: “I think there was a lot of work behind the scenes you know and really simply helping Formula 1 understand, helping Liberty Media understand what the offer was from that point of view.
“I think there was certainly some confusion about the statements made over a period of time and so as soon as it became clear that it was the Cadillac F1 team, they saw that we were bringing value in the series.
“I think they understood this and we were able to agree with the role for a new team in Formula 1 and so we are very excited about it.
“But yes, many changed when we are directed from the previous direction and I think the rest is story as they say.”
Towriss to lead the Motorsports Separation
The Cadillac F1 team will be able to call on the experience of some high teams from the US racing series, after starting Towriss -led Motorsports.
The extension of the TWG Global, a group that has shares in the Premier League Chelsea squad, Los Angeles Dodgers of MLB and Los Angeles Lakers of NBA, will include Cadillac F1 along with the likes of the Global Andrew, who compete in Indycar and Formula E.
A Twg statement said: “TWG Global Today announces the beginning of Motorsports, a new division created to join a portfolio of key engine organizations to direct competitive perfection, ingenuity and commercial innovation throughout the globe in order to challenging in the very top of the sport. ”
Two Global Mark Walter co -chair added: “Dan has been useful in the formation of the historical team Cadillac Formula 1 in partnership with General Motors and the purchase for the Global A Global Portfolio that includes Global, Wayne Taylor Racing and Spire Motorports.”
Towriss says the new F1 entry will use the experience of twg across Motorsport – and other sports – to ensure that they bring something new and exciting to the network.
He said: “I think the thing I am most excited about by Cadillac with General Motors is the partnership, the cooperation we have in all teams to really compare and enter our collective experiences.
“We really want to bring something new to the Formula 1 world. You don’t have to expect a COOKIE COKIE Formula 1 team from this new Cadillac F1 team.
“A new team, so there will be a lot to see. I’m sure there will be some massacre along the way, looking at a new team.
“We will have a lot to offer and we will think about it on the global scale that is Formula 1 and not just concentrated in the SH.BA”
