Jamie Carragher called Eddie Howe “The Real Deal” after he led Newcastle to their first big internal trophy for 70 years.
A wonderful head from Boyhood News fan Dan Burn just before the break and a sublime conclusion by the Talisman Alexander Isaac in the Carabao Cup final, located on the course for a 2-1 win over Liverpool in Wembley for which generations had wanted.
He was also a great first trophy for Howe, who became the first manager of the house to win one of the main English football trophies in nearly 17 years.
Sports Sky ‘ Carragher thinks Howe must have been the man to replace Gareth Southgate but the loss of England is certainly Newcastle’s profit.
Carragher said: “He has done a great job. I think he is the real deal.
“It is not ideal that the team of England does not have an English manager. When the work became available, I said Eddie Howe was the best option. If the Ar name named it, he would probably not do it today!
“Under Howe, Newcastle have been a physical team, but they saved the best so far.
“It wasn’t a great football game but a lot of this was probably a Newcastle ploy. There is a lacking in Liverpool’s three front rhythm.
“It’s not their day. Everything is about Newcastle. Set wise, duel in the middle of the park and rhythm. Liverpool couldn’t afford.”
Howe: I’m exciting, that is different from me!
Howe became Newcastle’s first manager to win a big trophy since Joe Harvey in 1969 when they set up the Fair Cup, and the first to win an internal trophy since Doug Livingstone when they won the FA Cup.
After helping the club running away from its first season, Howe has since led the club in qualifying the Champions League and two major Cup finals.
“We wanted to make the football club proud today,” Howe said. “We are trying to break new land and hopefully this is a turning point for us.
“Emotional, very exciting. Also very different from me. We knew what was in discussion and we just wanted to make them all proud.
“We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years injured.
“There was a different feeling. We’ve won the game and everything will be positively reviewed, but we were well prepared and I was very sure the players would perform.”
Burn: Do I dream?
Lad Lad Burn got the ball by rolling to Newcastle.
The defender sold in the box from the outside, met with a removed corner and planted a great head home from 15 yards outside. It was the dream things for the Boyhood Magpies fan, who also celebrated being called from England this week for future internationals.
He said, “I’ve had worse weeks! I don’t want to go to sleep because I feel like I am dreaming.
“I knew that Alexis (Mac Allister) was not looking, so I could get a dance on it. As soon as I directed it, I knew it was inside.
“I feel strange the minute. Hard is hard to put in words.”
Guimaraes: One of the best days of my life
Newcastle Bruno Guimaraes midfielder talking about Sky Sports:
“I wanted to put my name in the history of the club. Now we can say we are the champions again!
“Onesh one of the best days of my life. I have no word. They (fans) deserve it.
“People have grown up and not seen Newcastle as champions, I’m very happy. That’s one of the best days. We deserve that; it’s incredible.
“This is my second home. The departure, the Champions League and now the champions.
“We’re making history. One day when I leave this club, I want fans to sing my name as they do (Alan) Shearer. He texted before the match. I’m so exciting.”
