Scottie Scheffler matched the record for the smallest amount of shocks ever at a PGA Tour event while he attacked in an eight stroke win at CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas.
World No. 1 scored one last day 63 to end in -31 for the tournament and eight clear of Erik Van Royen of South Africa to seek his first PGA Tour’s victory of the year in his hometown tour.
The American was in line with the PGA Tour’s 72-year record on Sunday, ending in 253, and could have charged a 59 spectacular if he would play the last three holes in three-nine-par, but a second belly in the 17th proved a rare flame in a round, which saw Eighth and eight birds.
He watched to break the PGA Tour record with an eight -legged bird stroke on 18, but it slipped from the left side of the hole and he had to choose for a portion of the record set by Justin Thomas in Sony Open 2017 and was equal to six years later by Ludwig åberg at RSM Classic.
Van Royen matched Scheffler’s 63 to finish on 23 under, three shots ahead of Sam Stevens and four in front of a homeland’s favorite, Jordan Spieth.
Eight players – Sam Burns, Mark Hubbard, Will Gordon, Eric Cole, Kurt Kitayama, Ricky Castillo, Adam Schenk and Kanaya Takum – connected to the fifth.
After a weather -related interruption on Friday and a late afternoon for the third round of Saturday that ended after the dusk was the quiet sailing for Scheffler on the last day of the tournament.
He began round with an eight stroke and recorded five birds, a noise and then an eagle in the ninth for a ninth score of 30.
He was 29th through the first 63 holes and moved to record territory with birds in holes 11, 14 and 15.
But with the full record in his eyes he found approximate from Tee to 17th and, after his chip hit again, he settled for Bogey.
Scheffler, whose previous best conclusion Nelson was a tie for fifth two years ago, lost last year’s event for the birth of his son, Bennett, whom he held in his arms as he spoke after becoming the first wireless winner at the event since Tom Watson 45 years ago.
“It seemed to me to play a good golf. I kept myself in position most of the week,” he said.
“(Van rooyen) played a really good round today and made a lot of pressure on me. In nine money, I did a good job to answer and kept it in the bay. I played some nice balls
“It is very special. It is hard for it is difficult to put in words. I had my first chance of playing a professional event here in 2014 and I am very grateful for that.
“I learned a lot that week, and I was inspired a lot to get here and try to make a living in this game. I’m very lucky to be in this position.”
See Scheffler’s victory to find the shape ahead of the PGA championship in Quail Hollow Club, which will be live Heavenly from May 15-18.
“What he is doing is inspiring,” Spieth told Scheffler.
“It would be really cute if I were the one in that last group, and at least we would come back and a little. That would have been a lot of fun, just being a hometown players.
“I had a little luck in 18 years old. I thought I hit him in the water, and ended up doing birds. These are the types of holidays you ever need to shoot 62.”
