Emma Raducanu crashed by Madrid Open despite a positive performance against Argila specialist Martha Kostyuk.
The former US Open champion reached the quarter-finals of one of the main events of WTA Tour for the first time in Miami Open last month, but will not repeat the feat in the Spanish capital.
Raducanu recorded an impressive direct victory over the Suzan lamene in the opening round, but despite showing off the world class splendor, she was unable to stop Kostyuk, which was planted in the 24th, sealing a 6-4 2-6 6-2 victory.
Raducanu had beaten Costyuk at their last meeting on the same tournament three years ago, but made a weak start here.
She was excavated to grab her way from 1-3 to 3-3 only for two double mistakes to see her immediately fall, with the costyuk that continues to take the opening set.
Kostyuk received treatment on her right ankle in front of the second set, and this time it was Raducanu who made the strongest start, with the 22-year-old who flattened the match thanks to a four-match run.
But a poor game from Raducanu, who is continuing to work informally with coach Mark Petchey, to start the decision maker, set the tone while Kostyuk enabled her way to the finish line.
“I lost a very easy match for three years ago, so they weren’t good memories,” 22-year-old Kostyuk said.
“I knew Emma a great fighter and she has achieved a lot and can play amazing tennis. It would be a battle so happy with victory.”
Fleming: Raducanu finding her clay legs
Colin Fleming, talking further Tennis: “Emma Raducanu is a competitive. She will be disappointed at this stage, but I think when the dust is set there is a lot to get from this match. This was a good level occasionally on a surface where she has not played a lot of tennis recently.
“If she can continue to work, continue to find her legs in clay, her movement, her balance and just comfort on this surface. I think she can still have some great results in this clay-judicial season and I think she will serve her well beyond that in the grass and difficult.
“Too positive to get from this.”
