With the 5,000th match of the Super League on March 29, some of the players and coaches of Super League, past and present, have taken a trip down Lane Memory to choose their highlights …
Liam Marshall (Wigan Warriors)
“The one who comes to my mind is Wigan’s 31-30 win at Bradford at Play-Off. I think it was 2007 or 2008 if I remember rightly.
“The moment was the goal of the fall of Pat Richards to win it – I think it was his first goal of falling career.
Liam Farrell (Wigan Warriors)
“Mine actually goes to a team of saints. The famous’ wide ‘western’ try and Chris Joynt wins it. He climbs on his head, many loads, and no one expects it to be a test at the end of it. It is a classic moment by Super League.”
Shaun Wane (Wigan Warriors and England Coach)
“When I think of my favorite moment, the one who stays quite selfish is 2010 and Wigan beating St. Helens in Old Trafford quite convincingly. The last whistle is not a moment, but the feeling you need to get the victory against St Helens, our arch rivals. To show that we were no longer a semi -final team, I loved it!”
Paul Wellens (St. Head Head coach)
“My favorite moment of Super League as a fan returned in 1996 watching St Helens winning their first title. I was in popular stay at Knowlesy Road and the experience of that day is just something I will never forget.
“Then as a player, I got the honor and privilege to capture my birth club in a big final victory in 2014. Again, this is a memory that I will not forget.”
Jonny Lomax (St Helens)
“As a fan, the broad moment in the west. I remember I was at the end of the result when that trial was being scored. Then, as a player of 2020.
Jack Welsby (St Helens)
“My favorite moment of the Super League was in the Headingley. We had a pretty new team at night, but James Roby broke the record for the Super League appearances. I just remember a flag that was bringing and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook making it around the field.
James Roby (St Helens)
“I think mine is Jack Welsby’s proof from 2020, Grand Final. That year had been different and we played the big final in Hull without fans.
“In particular, you can’t really write it. To score the winning test against Wigan in a magnificent final after the last buzz and the Drama of Tommy Machon’s fall goal. Also, having James Graham there, a great friend of mine to finish his career that night was a very special moment.”
Matty Ashton (Warrington Wolves)
“My favorite moment of the Super League is ‘wide in the West’ called by Eddie and Stevo when Chris Joynt scored that last minute test. It’s a video that always comes out in my family group. My brothers and dad are with me in it, they love that moment too.
James Harrison (Warrington Wolves)
“I think mine is the good Friday scrap between Wigan and St Helens. I think Jon Wilkin is involved in it, Paul Sculthorpe, Andy Farrell. Very brutal and you don’t get it nowadays.
Toby King (Warrington Wolves)
“My most memorable moment of the Super League, the one who stands in my mind, but the big finale with Ben Flower and Lance Hohaia. Just be there with how crazy it was and seeing that situation unfolding was just like ‘Oh my Lord’. A red card after a few minutes in a big Super League final is just a mental moment. “
Paul Rowley (Salford Devils Red Trainer)
“There are different emotions. You talk about dreams and dreams are raising a trophy for my hometown. Then training, just walking in St. Helens for a friendly with this group after the misfortune we have passed is a proud moment in itself.
Ryan Brierley (Salford Red Devils)
“I think about me, making my debut for Salford in the Super League was pretty special. As a childhood fan it was my dream to make it and I was lucky to reach it and no one could remove it from me now.”
Ryan Hall (Leeds Rhinos)
“Hard hard to break up! I’ve experienced a lot now, so I’ve got two in mind. One is definitely the test against Huddersfield at the end of 2015 to catch the shield of league leaders. This was a great moment.
“But my No. 1 is the Play-off match 2011 against Warrington. We had finished the fifth in the league and no one was waiting for us to win. We had no right to go to Warrington which had been excellent all year, scored over 1,000 points, and beat them 26-24.”
Lachie Miller (Leeds Rhinos)
“My favorite super League moment from all over the years should be Rob Burrow’s proof from 2011. It is one of the best individual efforts in a grand final and maybe sometimes. Only class.”
Oliver Russell (Wakefield Trinity)
“My is my Rob Burrow proof in the big final when he entered and then around Paul Wellens. It is a great great moment and one of a legend in Rob Burrow.”
Sam Halsall (Giants Huddersfield)
“My favorite Super League moment was the last match at Knowsley Road when Keiron Cunningham scored the latest test.”
