Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw twice scored on her return to Manchester City Women’s starting XI while they defeated Liverpool Women 4-0 in WSL.
The attacker did not show up in the FA Cup victory last weekend against Leicester after she underwent racist and misogynist abuse after a 4-3 loss to Arsenal.
But she made a poor return to the squad for Sunday’s game, opening the score in half an hour. She returned home Mary Fowler’s good pass, and after celebrating with her teammates she then performed a greeting ‘black power’ bending her head and raising her fist in a response to the last racist abuse that she has suffered.
The gesture was made famous by American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics as an attitude against racism.
Just before the break, a great conclusion from Shaw doubled Man City’s lead. It was Fowler who placed her again, cutting the ball again for her teammate to drop the ball down excellently and collides at home.
Talking about shaw and the abuse he faced after the game, Sports Sky ‘ Izzy Christensen said: “It’s a great level of consciousness from Shaw to get yourself out of the equation, because as players, we are very competitive people and your brain can do funny things ever.
“If you are not in the right space when you are in your performance arena, you can do something silly and you can end up suffering more because you are not in the right space because of something else from the outside.
“We know that the abuse the shaw took has influenced it because it made a step away from the game. This is not the person who provides that winning abuse, is actually shaw win because what she has done this evening is to score two goals.
“She is in a tremendous space and she has responded to whatever that person said. Shaw has come out and she has told people that there is no room in football for any kind of annoyance.
“Unfortunately, this is what is social media. It is a point of approach for people to do such things, which ultimately makes you stronger in the long run. We don’t know how shaw feels shaw but all you can do is understand and respect her.
The hosts continued to add to their outcome after the break. Roord made it three an hour, grabbing the free ball from a cleaning. Her first attempt was blocked, but the second painted in the area and Teagan Micah past.
Gracie Prior then made it a first start of WSL to remember with a great goal – though it seemed to be a cross. She went down to the right arm, sending the ball to the area and instead of finding a teammate, she entered the upper corner, passed the lying hand of Micah.
Although Liverpool will leave their journey to the Joie Stadium, they were not without their chances. Ceri Holland saw a line cleaned from Rebecca Knaak in the first half, while substitute Cornelia Kapocs forced two excellent savings by Ayaka Yamashita.
As for the table, Man City remains in the fourth, now only two points after Arsenal. Liverpool remains seventh in 15 points.
Taylor: We could have scored more goals
city head Gareth Taylor BY Heavenly: “I think the girls handed over the game plan really well. We knew Liverpool would be aggressive and they had some moments, maybe more than we would like.
“We made changes in the second half, we adapted a few things, but I thought the way we brought the players forward to the box early was really good … We could have potentially had some more goals.”
In Shaw: “If you look at them over the past few seasons, the amount of goals she has scored, of course we do (rely on her). If she lifts it, does it mean someone else will come in and score them goals?
“It is very different in terms of the types of goals it can score, but at the moment there are wings that are doing well for it, the midfielders who are providing for it too. I’m sure it with I really enjoy playing inside this team because she knows she will get a chance. “
In Mary Fowler: “For someone who is still so young, she plays a lot. She’s really important to us and she can play even in different positions. It helps the team with its quality. When you see it in that way of the form in which it was, I think it is very difficult to play against.
“We are a little concerned with its hamstring problem and we need to make sure this is well managed and we cannot take any risks to the end.”
The beard takes responsibility for the performance of the first half
Liverpool manager Beard BY Heavenly: “In the first half, maybe – but not perhaps – I understood it. We needed to adapt things faster, but we had so much chance to score … it could have been 6-4 honest with you.
“We were very passive in the first half. We didn’t split as quickly as we should. We were too slow to get into positions to play and we were many passers -by and we are worried about the return of the ball and being opposed.
“But if we don’t get in positions, then we will not be able to own the ball and I thought the second half, we did it a little better. It is a disappointing night for us.
“Well the confidence you can make it against these high sides. Due to the season we had, we have had little doubt in these games against high teams, but as I told the girls before the match, as we have returned to WSL , I think we have chosen 21 points against the high parties in the division, so we know we can do it, is simply having that little confidence to get your head down on the training ground, continue to work hard ” .
