Matthew asked 25 stitches after a horror challenge from Milwall Liam Roberts goalkeeper saw that lying in the selhurst Park in the fifth round of last month’s FA Cup that won 3-1.
Roberts received a prolonged prohibition of six -games from the football association for his high boot in Matthews, who was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after being left bloodied by a challenge with ear injuries.
But the Matthew was unaware of the severity of the wounds he had suffered and begged with the palace doctor to let him return.
On an exclusive TV with Sky Sports News reporter ‘Kaveh Solhekol, Matthew said, “When he hit me, I was on the floor waiting for him to get the red card. I was fine.
“I was arguing with the doctor for 30 seconds, saying I wanted to play. The doctor saw the damage, but I couldn’t see it.
“I couldn’t feel pain. Blood, for sure. But I thought it was a little cut. My ear was like that (hanging). But it was not painful.”
He added: “From the palace, everyone was sending me messages and wanted to come to the hospital to see me. The doctor told them it was good and that I would visit the training ground.
“Liam contacted me and sent me with text while I was in the hospital and I said” it’s good is football. “He apologized. He was worried.”
Roberts abuse ‘crazy’
Despite the terrible nature of the Derby incident in South London, the Matthew does not believe Roberts had a malicious intention in the challenge.
“I don’t think he woke up and thought I want to cut JP’s head,” he said. “There is a lot of pressure. He wanted to do well, a lot of emotions makes you do crazy things. It was just a mistake. You learn from it.”
The palace before also commented on the abuse Roberts received on social media, which led to Milwall to issue a statement in support of their player after the injury.
“Is it crazy but you know the fans will react to social media,” he said. “I haven’t sent them to do that.”
Matthew to wear face masks in return to action
The Frenchman lost the 1-0 Premier League home win over Ipswich on March 8 – their last match before international break – but he is aiming for the match against Fulham at the FA Cup quarter -finals on March 29 after now returning to individual training.
When asked about his recovery and the time limit for his return, Matta added: “We were in Marbella last week and I trained (not with the team).”
When he was postponed for a response on the date of his return, he continued: “I don’t know. I’m still in contact with specialists and doctor. We hope, soon.
“Hope, I can play (vs fulham). Hopefully they can see me. I’m on Earth every day.”
Matthew also confirmed that when he makes his return to the field, he will wear a protective mask while the stitches continue to heal completely.
“I need to wear a mask, I have to wear something,” he said. “I will get the best that is the most comfortable.”
