Joe Root says that “that ship has sailed” about his chances of being the next one-day international captain of England, focusing on the intention series against India and Australia.
England needs a new skipper limited with Jos Buttler, resigning from the role during the Dismal Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan, in which the team lost all three of them.

The test group begins their summer with a four-day match against Zimbabwe on Trent Bridge from May 22, a curtain attacker in front of the main events VS India and Australia.

Root added: “These are the years you play for. Two of the biggest teams, two of the biggest series you can play as a player of England. Something something the team is enjoying.
“I think the building of this team – covering a lot of bases and giving yourself a lot of opportunities to be successful under different conditions.
“I think we are able to (win grace). I think we should take care of the things that lead to it. We have to play some really strong crickets at home.
“We are good in our conditions, but with India coming for a series of five games there is no hidden place. It is a long old slogan, you have to be stable.
“You have to put those winning performances again from time to time.”
Being motivated for the challenges ahead, the leading scorer of the Test Test in England added: “I think as soon as you lose it, I think it’s time to call it one day.
“You are constantly looking to evolve, you never want to stay yet, you never want to be the guy who is happy with the place they are.
“As long as you have that mentality to find ways to help yourself and the team move forward – whether it is working with some of the younger players, trying to be a good professional about training and giving some good tips – then this can only benefit yourself but also the boys around you.
