Everton Football Director Kevin Thellwell is set to join Rangers, Sky Sports News understands.
Gers Director General of Patrick Stewart has sought a new sports director since February and seems to be moving for the 51-year-old, who moved to the Merseyside club in 2022 from New York Red Bulls.
Thelewell – who has also worked in Wolves, Derby County and Preston North End – confirmed in March that he would leave Toffees at the end of his contract, amid a number of structural changes in the club.
During his three years in the Premier League dress, thellwell has overseen difficult times that have included wars with PSR rules, drops of points, a battle against renunciation, and managerial changes.
However, he has seen the club win 226 million in in the transfer fees, while spending only £ 145m on six transfer windows. For the context, the nine sides of the Premier League spent over 100 million in in the last summer window.
Despite the fighting on the field and the circumstances leading to the lack of spending, it is decided to start with Everton growing under David Moyes and enter a new stadium next season.
Understandably, Thellwell met with senior Ibrox figures recently, after visiting the club facilities in Glasgow.
Rangers are decided to undertake by US investors, with andrew Cavanagh health tycoon and 49ers enterprises locked in an agreement to receive a controlling action in IBROX.
Why are the Rangers appointing a sports director?
Director General Stewart ordered a “radical summary and branch of the entire football department” in January as he watched to restore success to the club.
It was confirmed by Ibrox’s chief that the appointment of a sports director was identified by the external review and has since worked in search.
Rangers have won only one league title in 14 seasons, and have dismissed three managers since 2022 – with Stewart saying that the appointment would have “responsibility for all football operations across the club”.
He added that the appointment would be “an experienced football person who will be responsible for all aspects of the football club to ensure that they are working together towards fulfilling our united Holistic Plan”.
Rangers have been operating without a sports director since Ross Wilson left for Nottingham Forest in April 2023.
