Lucy Bronze’s late title helped connect a six-consecutive WSL title for Chelsea women, beating UTD Women 1-0 in Leigh Sports Village.
Blues were given the opportunity to finish the league after Arsenal was beaten 5-2 by Aston Villa earlier on Wednesday, knowing that one point would be enough.
Marc Skinner pushed Chelsea all the way to an energetic, intense game, but the bronze finally made progress as she watched at home the corner of Sandy Baltimore to seal the title for her two -game team to play.
Just just the tenth goal of WSL Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Man Utd Defense have accepted this season, and could have been more if it weren’t for their goalkeeper in shape.
Her best moment came early in the second half, denying Erin Cuthbert, Aggie Bever-Jones and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd in a quick success.
The loss is a blow to Man UTD’s hopes for the Champions League women’s football next season, who still remain two points behind Arsenal with Gunners and Local Rivals Manchester City still playing.
They must have been removed with at least one point as well. Melvine Malard approached late in the first half, joining a poor pass by Chelsea back, but was denied by Naomi Girma and Hannah Hampton. Grace Clinton then sent the sequel to the grass.
Malard also pulled a good rescue from Hampton minutes after the break, but Man Utd was unable to find a way to spend the eventual WSL champions.
Chelsea has now won the title for a sixth season and marks the first WSL victory of Sonia Bommaster in its first season at the top. She remains on the course for a domestic triple, having already won the League Cup earlier this year.
Blues will face UTD man again in the FA Cup women’s final on May 18 at Wembley while they seek to finish another trophy against current holders.
Bommaster: Title wins tonight feels a little unreal
Chelsea coach Sonia Bommaster to Sky Sports:
“It’s an excellent achievement. It feels a little unrealistic, but we were not expecting Arsenal to fall tonight, but being away, being able to dance again after the game on Sunday and be able to win against a big team feel amazing.
“I told my team before the match that is a great opportunity for us to take a step closer to the title, even if I didn’t expect this to be true. I’m so proud of my players, all staff, team and club.
“Tonight was a team performance, we stayed together. We jumped out that showed the excellent character this team has.
“Starting the season, I didn’t expect us to be in that position and capable of reaching it with two remaining matches. I knew we worked hard to fight to the end.
“The biggest challenge is probably my English? But this league is really competitive, so that we just be in that position to be invincible and achieve what we just do is something very good.
“Not easy to come as a new manager, in a new place, to fit in a new league. I have learned a lot. But I have a large group of players and also a great staff. I’m not the only one.”
Bronze: We want to go unbeatable now
Chelsea goals Bronze to Sky Sports:
“We knew that a draw was quite good too. We wanted to be invincible and keep a clean sheet, but it’s good to score and win the victory.
“Better is better to celebrate being champions when you win a game.
“The lucky thing for us this season is that we have been invincible, so there were always two things to look for.
“Although we have won tonight, we know we still have received two games and want to win those games. We want to be invincible throughout the season.
“The nice thing is that we have to end up at home in Stamford Bridge and all fans have to go down and celebrate by winning the trophy.
“Hard hard to focus on so many races, we’ve always said that. We’ve done well to keep ourselves in all of them to the end.
“It was good to come here and celebrate a win, the title and to spend the frustration of the weekend.
“Next season we can continue and improve much more by not being to our maximum for the second half of the season.
“Sonia has done well so far. She wants much more from us and we can give her.”
Christensen: What has a bominator job done
Sports Sky ‘ Izzy Christensen In Leigh Sports Village:
“This is what dreams have been made for Sonia Bommaster, her staff and her new players and existing players who have done so before.
“They don’t care where they do it or how they do it, as long as they do it.
“Man Utd were the best team this evening, but that goal and that of the bronze and team that took the line is credit for the foundations built by this team.
“It’S’S’S such a great task and a great weight to perform (to win the WSL title again), but to have two trophies already, this is what you remember as a player.
“Affairs has done a bommerical job. Great players with injuries throughout the season, that depth, that support, those resources and they have found their way to win it again.”
Hampton thanks Villa for Arsenal’s victory
CHELSEA goalkeeper Hannah Hampton to Sky Sports:
“It’S’S’S incredible, I don’t think I got enough words. I have to say thanks to Villa that helped us start the evening.
“I am very excited and happy to be in this team. We have achieved everything we wanted, maybe not in the Champions League, but we fight to the end.
“This is what we have done here, we have won the two -match league to go, so we are all ecstatic. You believe it will not give up those games, we want to go invincible for the whole season.
“We knew we had to respond in a good way. Maybe it’s not the way we wanted to get out of the Champions League.
“We knew we could have done a little more war, but there is always the next year.
“For now, we can enjoy this. We’ve got them back within weeks, so it will be a difficult game, then to get the triple, but we will give it all.”
