Brandel Chamblee thinks Rory Mcilroy has his best chance to win masters, but believes that Augusta National is “Nemessis” that brings the worst Golf of Northern Irish.
Mcilroy reaches Georgia still in search of the elusive victory required to complete the Grand Slam career after recording 21 Top-10 conclusions in diplomas since his 2014 PGA success.
World No. 2 low at the top of the FedExcup rankings and with two PGA Tour winning this year, after his season opening at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM with a play-off success in players in March.
He revealed he looked at The Devil Wears Prada – Based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel – The Night before his Monday victory at TPC Sawgrass, with Chamblee using two of the leading characters from that film to describe Mcilroy’s hopes in Masters
“I would say Augusta National is Priest Miranda for Rory Mcilroy playing like Andrea Sachs,” said Chamblee in a pre-Master media call Golf. “Nemes his nemesis. She brings out the worst golf in Rory every year we see almost every year.
“It was his worst golf last year in diplomas, the worst golf a year ago. Two years before that, it was his worst golf. He underestimates there every year. He strikes on average about 42 greens, and on average, the winner hits about 52 greens.
“There are things about that golf course that have been very problematic for him, but I will say he is switching to a softer ball, I think, really makes the arch and gives us greater hope for his success there because he is forcing him to take it on top.
“There is a reason for the golf world to be excited about the opportunity, and again, from a competitive point of view, he has never gone to masters playing better or sharper from a competitive point of view.”
Mcilroy man to beat in Augusta?
Scheffler defensive champion has just ended outside the top-20 three times in the last 18 months, but remains without a win in 2025 after losing the start of the season through damage, while the great champion Xander Schauffle has also fought for the gym.
“He will not catch Scheffler a little more from his game than Scheffler is now,” Chamblee added. “Xander (Schauffle) is a little far from his game.
“There are things about Augusta National who do not suit Collin Morikawa. Ludwig åberg is shortly away from his game.
“You deduct the list, and his closest competitors, those who are convenient to give him his biggest challenge, everyone can say they are a little far from their game – Rory has never been in a better place going to masters.
“From a technical point of view and a mental point of view, this is Rory.”
Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods remain the only five players – from the beginning of masters in 1934 – to complete the Grand Slam career, with Mcilroy having another chance to join the exclusive group.
“Only one has done it (Grand Slam) in the last 59 years – I would say it’s a testimony to the increasing level of competition,” Chamblee said. “So we can make our lids what Rory is trying to do. He’s one of the 12 players who has won three of the four legs of modern career Grand Slam.
“In fact, there were not for many players to approach too much. Arnold Palmer approached in ’68 in PGA (championship) when he lost Putt.
“You can look at Rory in 2018 while he stayed in the first Tee along with Patrick Reed, where he was in the sense of making him, but there was only a lack of success in completing the Grand Slam career.”
