Rory Mcilroy praised his great resistance and support of sports psychologist Bob Rotella after being again loaded on to Grand Slam career in Masters.
Mcilroy arrived in Augusta National among favorites to win a major major since 2014 and made a start of dreams on the day of opening, playing his first 14 holes in four under, just to charge twice in a three -hole stretch on his round.
World No. 2 did not speak to the media as a level 72 left seven strokes after the early leader Justin Rose, of seven years in a row, was six or more behind the first round, only for him to jump back in spectacular fashion on Friday morning.
Mcilroy made a patient start in his second round as he reached 35, before shooting an eagle and three birds in his next six holes to charge a 66 without Bogey and go to the weekend just two blows after Halfway Leader Rose.
“I think, in general, just proud of myself with the way I replied today after ending last night,” Mcilroy said. I just had to remind myself that I played really good golf yesterday.
“I would not allow two bad holes to dictate the narrative for the rest of the week. But yes, ultimately just proud of how I returned to it.
“After leaving the properties, I tried to leave what had happened here. I hurried home to see (daughter) poppy before going to bed and I feel like doing a good job to restore.
“I had a good conversation with Bob Rotella (sports psychologist) not to be pushing too early, I just tried to really stay, really patient and this was rewarded with a beautiful little stretch in the middle of the round.
“I don’t think I have tried anything if anything I just supported the trust I have in myself and the belief that I am just as resilient as someone else here.”
Mcilroy’s round was discovered on the opening day, when he doubled the 15th, after throwing the slope at the risk of water with his third shot, but he played the hole three strokes better with a second round bird.
“I was so frustrated last night because I played so well, and you can make these big numbers from absolutely nowhere to this golf course, just like the most benign position,” Mcilroy added.
“It was a good reminder last night that you just have to have your minds for him in every single golf stroke. Then today, when the second shot was in the air, it was a little touch and go.
“Even where the ball ended the type of slope, I was thinking of running to score it to make sure it would not run again down the hill. It was good to do a four there to keep the moment I had built in those previous holes.”
Mcilroy again on the right track or work to do?
Only one of the last 19 winners of the masters has been more than four shocks from the lead after the first round, though Mcilroy remains hunting to join Sir Nick Faldo (1990) and Tiger Woods (2005) as the only players who returned seven after the opening day in Augusta National and Win The Green Jacket.
“Stuff is fabulous things,” Faldo told Sky Sports. “To move on yesterday and two doubles, I felt that he would basically turn back to zero and start again. This will be won on 10 or 12 under, he has taken a long time; he has three rounds to reach that result.
“He has looked great. It’s all about how you react when something goes wrong. Once you start to see trouble, you have to deal with the next hole.
“He has been here for enough time, he knows green sections that are dangerous. Don’t try to become a hero and the earth immediately in number, give yourself half a chance. He really looks like he can do it this time.”
Former Ryder Cup’s captain Paul McGinley, commenting on Sky Sports, added: “He (Mcilroy) would have been destroyed by walking yesterday in that golf course. He played excellently and left four or five strokes behind him, especially when you see someone like Scotie Scheffler starting to such a quick start.
“He reassessed last night and was restored himself, but I think he was lucky today. I think a number of things have gone on his way and he can easily be four or five shots today. Mrs. Luck has excelled, but I think balance over time.
“He was ready outside him yesterday – he was probably mentally at the end of this round. He has done well to return today with a good result and put himself where he has to go on the weekend, because it is infamous that is what he does bad.
“His average note during the first two rounds has been two strokes higher than the weekend. Now he’s here for the weekend. Can he go and push? That’s the question.”
