Michael Van Gerwen is in unexplored territory while going on the Night 11 of the Premier League in Rotterdam while he sits outside the four of the first and without a night win in his name. He knows he has to change and quickly.
Since his first appearance in 2013, Van Gerwen has lost only in the final once, again in 2020 when he was sixth. In addition he has seven victories, two semifinal losses and two final losses.
However, in recent years Van Gerwen has fought with consistency, means that he has gone without a ranking title in his name since the player championship in 2022 and will not yet win a night win at the Premier League, seeing Gerwyn Price and Nathan Leapfrog.
Not only that, but the three -time world champion had to withdraw from the nine night in Berlin after holding a scary injury to the neck as he put on a shirt, obstructing his points further.
Despite such obstacles, World No. 3 claims that he still has full confidence that he can do it in the final at night and still has the “struggle” he needs to keep himself in charge even during difficult times.
“Now I’m painless. Still still a little rigid, but it’s not (something) that touches my arrows, I think,” Van Gerwen said.
“I think it’s just me who has the wrong arm. I think I have to buy a new one.
“Until a few weeks ago I think I played some lovely games with some good average. That alone didn’t really help. But it’s what it is.
“You have to deal with the circumstances and I have to make sure I’m in charge of things and I still have fire in my stomach. And still do something for me.
“Anger is still there when you don’t do 100%. I think that’s a good thing, still a lot to fight and work for it.
“It’s not the most pleasant moment in my career if you look at that view. But I never give up. I’ll fight for everything. And I know it’s still there.
“I know the challenge. You don’t lose it. You know what I mean? But of course, you have to keep your faith.
“And as long as you can do that, I think there is still a lot of possible.
“What you said in the last two years – I’m not consistent enough. I have not earned absolutely nothing. And yet, if you look at the ranking, I have won after two Lukes (Little and Humphries) the most price money. So from that point of view, I did not do much bad.
“I need to come up with an answer – fast because the Premier League does not expect anyone. You have to go on.
“I still believe I can do four, 100 percent better. But you have to perform. You have to get points and that’s the only thing you can do.”
Rotterdam to bring expectations that do not match reality
If the Dutchman can finally get his first night victory in 2025, it would be even more special because he would have the crowd on his side on his night in Rotterdam.
The reception he will feel is not lost in the ‘green car’ even though he knows that his shape does not guarantee it.
“It’s always more waiting for me. Maybe not now, I don’t know, because it would be really strange for all fans to wait for me to win after the last few weeks,” Van Gerwen said.
“I still believe in myself, so you never know. You know how quickly it can’t turn it (your way), also how quickly it can turn it (your way).
“If you were to ask me three, four weeks ago, I would say I’m not too far away. I’m a small percentage of what I’m able to do, but now I’m pushed back like five, six, seven percent, I think.
“So I have to make sure I am grafting it more and making sure I get it back into my pocket to make sure I’m strong in the arrows and I throw more freely.”
