Myles Garrett, the NFL defensive player of the year, has sought a trade from Cleveland Browns after eight seasons with the team.
The 29-year-old’s request comes after Cleveland’s manager Andrew Berry told reporters that Garrett would not be traded this season.
In a statement posted on Monday, Garrett said his desire to win a Super Bowl was behind his wish. Browns had the worst record in the league during the 2024 season, ending at 3-14.
“As a child who dreamed of NFL, everything I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl – and this goal feeds me today more than ever,” Garrett’s statement said.
“My love for the Northeast Ohio community and the extraordinary Cleveland Browns fanbase has made this one of the most difficult decisions of my life. These last eight years have formed me to the man I am today.
“While I wanted to call this city my home, my desire to win and compete in the largest stages will not allow me to be complacent.
“The goal was never to go from Cleveland to (Fame Hall in) Canton, it has always been to compete and win a Super Bowl.
“With this in mind, I have a request to trade from Cleveland Browns.”
Garrett has two years left in the five-year extension, $ 125 million he signed with Cleveland in 2020.
GM Berry Browns said last week: “We feel really good about myles, obviously, as a large part of our future.
“We look forward to him to be on the field. As I said at my press conference, we envision him to go from Cleveland to Canton when his career is over.”
Garrett is going from his seven-digit two-digit season, including four in a row with 14 or more, as he became the fastest player in NFL history in 100 sacks.
He has won the five-leading pro-Bowl nodes, the first All-Pro-pro-project team has been named and is the NFL defensive player of the year, and is again a finalist for the 2024 season.
Asked if he would overthrow an offer that included two first round choices for Garrett, Berry replied, “Correct. You can put it in the record.”
