Alpine has informed team director Oliver Oakes has resigned with immediate effect.
Oakes, who became the Chief Alpine last summer, will take on his duties taken by Executive Advisor Flavio Briratory, who oversees numerous world titles for Benetton in the 1990s and Renault in the mid -2000s.
The friend’s announcement comes after Sky Sports News Learned Alpine is thinking of removing driver Jack Doohan in front of the other F1 race in Imola on May 16-18, with spare driver Franco Corapinto in line for a return.
Alpine said: “The BWT Alpine Formula team announces that Oliver Oakes has resigned from his role as the team director. The team has accepted his resignation with immediate effect.
“As of today, Flavio Broiat will continue as an executive adviser and will also cover the tasks previously performed by Oliver Oakes.
“The team would like to thank Oliver for his efforts since joining last summer and for his contribution to help the team secure the sixth place in the 2024 constructors championship.
“The team will not make any further comment.”
OAKES founded the Grand Prix Hitech in 2015, with a British-based dress by running the one-country championships, including Formula 2 and Formula 3. Britain is a former racing driver and won the Carting World 2005 title.
He took over from Otmar Szafnauer as director of the Alpine team in August 2024 and without a double spectacular podium for Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly in Brazil later that year.
Broiat is a controversial figure in F1 as it was part of the “Crashgate” scandal who saw his driver Nelson Piquet with a collision in the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help Renault Fernando Alonso win.
He received a F1 life ban for his involvement in the incident, but this was overthrown by a French court.
The 75-year-old returned to F1 in May 2024 as Alpine Executive Advisor.
Broiat has been involved with F1 since the beginning of the 1990s, and has enjoyed success in the championship with Michael Schumacher in 1994 and 1995, then Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006.
Why did he resign Oakes?
Sky Sports’ Nigel Chiu:
“All this is likely to return to Jack Doohan’s unsafe future. So far, the 22-year-old has had a difficult novice campaign in Alpine, including two major clashes in Australia and Japan, then a tremendous noise in the last race in Miami when he collapsed in the first part of the Sprint Qualification.
“DOOHAN entered the season under great pressure due to the signature of Franco Colapinto as a reserve alpine driver. However, DOOHAN has apparently had the support of Oliver Oakes.
“When Alpine signed Colapinto, Flavio Broiat described Argentina as” one of the best young talent in Motorsport “and is clearly a fan of it.
“Perhaps Broiatry and Oakes have clashed over who should drive along with Pierre Gasly this season and Braiter has won the battle, if this news is everything to pass, leading to the resignation of Oaks’ friend.”
