Oscar Piastri has signed an extension of the McLaren contract that will hold it with the team by at least 2028.
The piastri began the race for McLaren in 2023 after signing a year ago, and has agreed a new multi-year agreement at the top of its current contract which goes by 2026.
The announcement, which comes before this weekend, opening the big Australian season Grand Prix Live in Sky SportsIt means that Piastri and Lando Norris will be McLaren’s teammates for the next three seasons, as Norris’s contract expires in late 2027.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that I am part of McLaren’s long -term vision. The team was confident in me when we signed in 2022, and the trip we continued over the past two seasons to help return McLaren to the top of the sport has been extraordinary,” Piaster said.
“There are so many talented and special people working in MTC who have helped me to become a Formula 1 winner very early in my career. Therefore, I am very proud to continue to represent this legendary team for many years to come.
“I am excited to fight for the big prizes as an McLaren driver and after last year’s fantastic achievements, this has made me even more hungry to stay at the sharp end.”
The piastri has won two competitions in his F1 career, last year’s Grands Prix and Azerbaijan, and is one of this season’s favorites with McLaren that is expected to have a strong car.
McLaren are the champions of the royal constructors and the chief executive Zak Brown says his team has the couple’s best driver on the network.
“Fantastic it is fantastic to confirm Oscar’s extension with McLaren. Not only is he a very talented driver, but his work ethic and his cultural adaptation within the team made him an intelligent to extend his time in papaya,” Brown said.
“We’ve got the best line of driver on the network, and in the past two seasons, we’ve seen how much an asset in the team’s Oscar is on the right track and out.
“He was absolutely essential to add to our heritage with the 2024 constructors championship last season, so we are all excited to see what we can do in the years to come as we continue to fight for world championships together.”
Will the piastri and Norris continue to work in unison?
Norris and the piastri seem to have a good relationship in the past two seasons together as teammates, but there were tense moments last year.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris was repeatedly told to leave the piastrin during the last stages of the race after he underlined his teammate in the pit stops. Eventually, Norris Le Piastri spend with three laps to go so that Australian wins his F1 girls race.
Six weeks later in Monza, Piastri crossed Norris in the opening of the Italian Grand Prix when the pair were first and second. In doing so, Norris also lost before Charles Leclerc and Driver Ferrari continued to win.
After the incident, McLaren stated that Norris would take precedence over the remainder of the season due to his position in the driver championship. However, in Azerbaijan’s Grand Prix, Norris slowed Sergio Perez to help Piastri and the latter won the race.
“Further extending our partnership with Oscars is a symbol of our faith and trust in him as a driver, as well as a reflection of our common ambition to continue in our championship struggle together,” said team director Andrea Stella.
“It has been a pleasure working with Oscars over the past two seasons and he has continued to prove how impressive he is in terms of talent, determination and his work as a driver and his contribution to our team and culture as a person.
“Alongside Lando, we have what we need to close for a long term to move forward. I look forward to continuing to see the Oscar to grow and develop as a driver and know that many successes stand for it.”
