We are now about a third of the road through the Indian Premier League Premier League, so it seems a good time to take action and assess which teams are looking healthy and which needs revival.
It is a cliché that bowling wins you T20 trophy, but it’s true. A look at the IPL table will also tell you that early first runners made significant changes in their auction game attacks, changes that have made them stronger.
Gujarat Titans reached two finals in their first two years, and in both seasons they had a gun attack.
In 2023, they even had the top three Wicket holders in the tournament in Rashid Khan, Mohammad Shami and Mohit Sharma.
Last year, their Bowling completely lost its advantage (also did the blanket, which did not help) and they looked a shadow of their ex.
At auction, they decided that a reconstruction was needed, and their smart purchases have already begun to bear fruit. Mohamed Siraj has looked closely at his ardent good, while Prasidh Krishna has once again shown that when he is capable, he can be a real weapon for India in all formats.
Canny Sai Kishore has performed the spin-bowling burden to the extent that it has not even been observed that Rashid was completely ineffective. If he also hits the shape, they will navigate the play-off.
Delhi’s capitals were the worst side of the tour games in the tournament last year, and they had to make a statement by signing in the fast Bowling department.
For some reason, Kolkata Knight Riders Le Mitchell Starc go (a strange decision), and the capitals moved to auction.
Four games inside and he has already made a big difference, catching early wickets to get Delhi ahead of the game. With Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel still one of the best rolling duots around, they now have a football game attack that can compete against the best filling formations.
His new ball partner Aussie Josh Hazlewood has had a similar impact on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Neither he nor Starc have played so many IPL crickets.
In fact, Hazlewood has played only 33 games. The main reason for this is that they have prioritized international cricket over IPL, something that has helped them keep them right and fresh in the mid -thirties.
Now we are seeing what IPL has lost in recent years and how much can any team that is lucky to have.
Fight Gujarat, Delhi and Bangalore with Batting
So Gujarat, Delhi and Royal Challengers have improved all their games attacks and as a result they are looking at rude health. The three teams at the bottom of the table are mainly because their shaking has not ceased.
Chennai Super Kings are the most noticeable example of this. They have been lost four in a row, all following, and whenever the lack of power of fire in the middle order has been as clear as the day.
They rely a lot in Shivam Dube in the second half of births and often Ravindra Jadeja and Vijay Shankar are required to mark very quickly from Ball One, something that does not come naturally with any of them.
The elephant in the room is MS Dhoni. His strike rate during the last two seasons has been very good, but because he has a chronic knee issue, the CSK has no desire to bring it up to the last five or sometimes even later.
But up to this point, it is often too late and the game is lost.
Coach Stephen Fleming said that ‘Dhoni can’t bathe 10 overs running on full stick’, but I still think he can behave a little earlier to give him time to influence a match with the stick. If CSK does not, it can end up too late for their chances of play-off.
The big friend of the season so far has been sunrisers who find themselves raising the table.
After the Royals prevailed in their first game, it seemed like they would get where they left last season, but their shaking suddenly worked in a major way. Their problem is not a lack of power, though – if anything, it is the opposite.
Mantra of all the first six – stopping Nitish Kumar Reddy – is to get all the weapons that blaze, but when it doesn’t work, it doesn’t seem to have a plan B. I still think they can recover and end in the first four, but they have to turn things right away.
Two of their next three matches are against Mumbai, which can help after they have started again poorly. On the paper, they have a strong filling formation, but they seem to be falling into tight tracking pursuits, which is not a habit in which you want to fall.
Their depth of rotation of the rotation also looks easy, which can be more of a problem while the ear tour.
There is a long way to do, so expect the table to change, but so far it looks like the Mega auction has shocked things and we can have some teams in the play-offs that were not there last year.
