Rory Mcilroy described his victory in his Grand Slam-Clinching career in Masters as the best day of his golf life while he brought Justin Rose to a play-off, after an extraordinary day in Augusta National.
Mcilroy was healed from the loss of his advantage overnight with two strokes with a double opening belly to lie forward with four, just to hit him lead over his closing six holes.
A noise in the latter forced Mcilroy to reproduce the 18th against Rose, who won his place of play-off with a stunning round of the last round, where he fired a scary approach within the three legs of Pin and gripped the victory with a bird.
“It feels incredible,” Mcilroy said when taking his hands on a first green jacket in Butler’s cabin. “This is my 17th time here, and I began to wonder if it were my time?.
“I would say that it was 14 years in doing, from coming out with four strokes in 2011 – feeling like I could have done it there. There were many closed emotions that just came out in the 18th green. But a moment like this makes all years and valuable calls.”
Mcilroy: Masters Pursuit was a heavy burden
With his victory, Mcilroy ended an 11-year-old drought in large tours, won a fifth title and the first in Augusta National-14 years further, as he mentioned, a last round collapse in 2011.
She also saw him only become the sixth golf player in history who finished his career Grand Slam, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
At his press conference, Mcilroy spoke how challenging the pursuit of this goal was over the past decade.
“I’ve done that burden since August 2014, nearly 11 years – not just to win my next major, but Grand Slam career, to join only five players to do it,” he said.
“I have seen many of my peers get green jackets in the process; it has been difficult. I have tried to approach this tour with the most positive attitude whenever I am presented, and I think the accumulating experience I have gained here every year, I feel a little more comfortable with the necessary shootings.
“But it’s talking about him and actually doing it. It was a heavy weight to keep, but thankfully now I don’t have to keep it and I hope he liberates me. I know I’m getting back here every year, which is beautiful!”
Mcilroy added: “I will not compare it with moments of life as a marriage or having a baby, but it is the best day of my golf life.
“I am very proud of myself. I am proud to never give up. I am proud of how I kept turning and dusting myself and not allowing disappointments to really come to me.”
Mcilroy thought ‘Did I leave this slide again?’
As well as Mcilroy’s collapse when led masters in 2011, recently he left the last round results slipping through his fingers in Open in 2022 and US Open in the back in 2023 and 2024.
Leading from two going to the last day of the masters, Mcilroy saw that it immediately disappeared when bogey double in the opening hole. Then, after rebuilding a four-stroke up to the 13th, another double without it soon evaporating.
There were some extraordinary shots and profits among Mcilroy’s mistakes, and eventually such an approach when reproducing 18 on the play-off won the title.
“You have to be the eternal optimist in this game,” Mcilroy said. “I’ve said it until I’m blue on your face, but I really believe I’m a better player now than 10 years ago.
“It is so difficult to stay patient. You continue to come back and not be able to do it.”
The 35-year-old added: “Today was difficult; I was nervous incredible this morning, as you saw with doubles in the first hole.
“I’ve been able to dance again and show that resistance I have talked about a lot. There were points in the nine rear, where I thought, ‘Did I leave this slide again?’ But I replied and am really proud of myself.
“It’s been an emotional week, so I’m excited to be the last man standing.”
Also, when asked what he would tell his newest self that exploded that with four strokes in the 2011 masters, Mcilroy replied: “Having self-reflection and going into the difficulties of difficult losses (helps), so I would tell every young girl or boy to keep confidence.
“I’ve literally made my true dreams, so if you work enough, you can achieve anything.”
