Sam Burgess and Tom Burgess will be in unexplored territory when Warrington Wolves get Giants Huddersfield in their opening of Super League.
The first time in their careers the Burgress brothers have been in opposing teams, with Sam Burgess’s coach of Wolves and Tom Burgess a new signature for Giants for 2025.
Before that, both represented South Sydney Rabbitohs at NRL along with each other Plus their other brothers George and Luke.
Now, the sisters and sisters will go against each other for the first time with Sam Burgess even admitting that he tried to sign his brother, but he refused.
“We tried to recruit it, but we were close enough on the lid to be right. He will add something to the Super League for sure,” Sam Burgess said.
“It will be good to close the opening opening. In a personal note, our families will be there, family friends and it will be a beautiful day.
“He brings a great deal of experience. He had over 250 games in NRL and 50 matches in Super League before it at Huddersfield plus 35 matches test.
“There are not many players who have that resume. He will be great for them – it’s a shame that we didn’t get it!”
Although Tom Burgess chose to play under his older brother, he is proud of what he achieved in his first year as the main coach and knows that Huddersfield will have a difficult task when taking them on Sunday.
Warrington are one of the favorites going in the 2025 season, with Huddersfield looking to get back on the right track after a harsh 2024.
“Goodbye to return to your mother country and there is no better way to start the season than against my brother,” Tom Burgess said.
“I’m from Huddersfield and I’m really enjoying it.
“My older brother, he is a little good, so who knows how he would have been like my coach. So I thought I would keep him a little separated.
“He was doing it as a player, he has always been a men’s leader, so it was no surprise to see him doing so well (in his first year as the main coach).
“He has improved them massively and they will simply continue.
“I’m really proud of him. That was his way and he has reached it now.”
