Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa are set for a showdown on Sunday at The Sentry with just one shot separating the pair after both shot 11-under 62 in the third round.
Former Masters champion Matsuyama leads at 27 under at Kapalua – a 54-hole record at the event – with two-time major champion Morikawa at 26 under in the first PGA Tour event of 2025.
Matsuyama had an eagle putt at 18 to match the course record but had to settle for birdies, one of 11 Japanese on record after setting a career personal best on a flawless day in Hawaii and maintaining his lead in the second round.
American Morikawa also closed with a birdie, his ninth of the round to go along with a 25-foot eagle on the par-five fifth that temporarily moved him into the lead.
“Collin played well and I just followed him, good day,” Matsuyama said. “It was a lot of fun, but I’d like him to take it easy tomorrow.”
Morikawa said of the performance in the final round: “You look back at the greats, they did it.
“I think if I asked myself, ‘Have I done this for the last six years, every time?’ Probably not.)
“But it’s tough. What I’m going to say this year is, ‘I’ve got four days, let’s see what I can do.’
Belgium’s Thomas Detry is five shots behind Matsuyama in third place at 22 under after an eight-under Saturday/#
South Korea’s Sungjae Im is one stroke back at 21 after matching Matsuyama and Morikawa’s 11-under 62, while England’s Harry Hall is fifth with a 20-under 66 after the third round.
